Verses Related to God’s Love

The Quran contains numerous verses that emphasize the love of God. Here are some key examples:

  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (And among the people are some who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they should love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah. If only they who have wronged would consider [that] when they see the punishment, [they will be] wholly for Allah.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (Say, “If you love Allah, then follow me, so Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”)
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion, Allah will bring forth [for] a people He will love and who will love Him, [they are] humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers. They strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favor of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is All-Encompassing and Knowing.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.)

  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire – of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (And [there are] others who love it – victory from Allah and a near conquest. And give good tidings to the believers.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (And the women in the city said, “The wife of the ruler is attempting to seduce her male servant. Indeed, she has deeply fallen in love with him. Indeed, we see her in clear error.”)

Narrations on Love

There are several hadiths from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that discuss the theme of love. Here are a few:

  • Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a man who loves a people but does not join them?” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: “A man will be with whom he loves.”
  • The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “A man visited a brother of his in another town, and Allah appointed an angel at his gate. When he arrived, the angel asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ He replied, ‘I want to visit a brother of mine in this town.’ The angel asked, ‘Do you have any favor to repay him?’ He replied, ‘No, except that I love him for the sake of Allah, the Almighty.’ The angel said, ‘I am a messenger from Allah to you, that Allah loves you as you love him.’
  • The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Should I direct you to something that, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread peace among yourselves.”
  • It is reported by Mu’adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took his hand and said: “O Mu’adh, I swear by Allah that I love you. I swear by Allah that I love you.” He then advised, “Do not forget to say at the end of every prayer: ‘O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You in the best manner.'”
