A Poem About Love from Al-Buhturi

This poem, “Those Who Avoid Us in Love,” is authored by the renowned poet Al-Buhturi, whose full name is Al-Walid ibn Ubayd ibn Yahya Al-Tai. Born in Manbij, located between Aleppo and the Euphrates, Al-Buhturi is celebrated for his poetic chains of gold and is regarded as one of the greatest poets of the Abbasid period, alongside Al-Mutanabbi and Abu Tammam.

Those who avoid us in love are those we cannot avoid,

And those we draw near in affection are often far away.

There must inevitably be a whisper that spreads over the distance,

While the distant is brought closer by the wayfarer.

Is there a day without a persistent antagonist,

Pouring upon us, or a watchful eye we must be wary of?

The longing dwells on us, weary from its lament,

And he who loves secretly overcomes those who oppose him.

No longer is the connection with the beloved easy for him,

Nor does the home of the beloved welcome him anymore.

Staying in a land with its allure,

While elsewhere, all his needs are unfulfilled.

Supplying the slums from the springs that flow,

To the foot of the slope, where the deluge flows.

How many nights did I pass there, indulged in rest,

With the longing gaze of a delicate eye still lingering?

Whenever will he return to me, half-waking from his dreams,

And relieve the burning torment that he grants?

Nor did I forget him when the second gem of his neck emerged,

And when the curls inclined towards me with grace.

An embrace that unsettles patience and its lingering doubts,

And ignites hope or spills tears from the weeping heart.

Wasn’t it made known that in the darkness of the night,

The life unveiled, and it became easier to venture?

And we returned what was borrowed, censured,

To its owners, and the truth commenced once more.

I marvel at this era, having wearied of its whims,

For the era is merely a shift of fortune and its wonders.

Whenever will a rooster hope to be selected for himself,

To be adorned with a crown, or will wielding claims suffice?

How then can a usurper claim the caliphate,

When he clutches the legacy of the Prophet devoid of kin?

The eastern pulpit wept when a tyrant loomed above,

Upon the people, a fury descended with clouds trailing by.

Heavy on the side of a pastried feast, vigilant,

For the betrayer observes backward, prepared for a contest.

When the presenter is laden from his current supply,

Will the star of royalty shine brightly or fall dim?

When the announcer arrives early to unveil his tale,

Will his praises dwindle while the critic exaggerates?

He has ventured into matters far beyond his understanding,

Sometimes he strives against it, at other times, he provokes it.

How then did you see the truth where it resided,

And how did you perceive the consequences of oppression?

Nor was the self-satisfied in God, as he strolled,

To lag behind, and the self-reliant in God propelled to pursue.

He cast a rod forcefully while subdued,

And stripped from the cloak of the Prophet his glory.

And I am delighted if told of a face that rushes,

Towards the east, challenging its ships and vessels.

To the drunkenness behind the hens, but it scarcely,

Would engage except in the necks of the fowls.

He has semblance from the crown they carry,

Jostling with his character and attracting him closer.

And what of the beard of the short-statured when it fluffed,

In bringing forth good fortune to those it pertains?

Bin Khalad traverses poetry from him,

And he becomes brave; however, ignorance remains his scribe.

I swear by the sacred sanctuary and those who inhabit,

Their peripheries through connection and honorable ties.

For he has burdened the community of Ahmad,

On a path that moves towards the undeniable truth.

The faith of God was restored after its signs faded,

Among us, while the stars bereft their glories.

And pleaded the radiance of kingship until gathered,

Its dawns, fulfilled and its dusks.

A guide of righteousness hoped for, and feared for his justice,

For he fulfills the visions of those who anticipate his mercy.

The manager of the world grasped awareness,

On the vast horizons and what the onlookers embraced.

How then, when his observations have returned,

And the vigor of challenging events calmed?

And a son of the family of the Prophet, if ever in hiding,

As for the moment of pardon, so too are souls unstable.

He envelops in forgiveness the sins and stretches,

His virtues towards his enemies and adversaries.

He wielded the sword until he rectified the defiant,

And once the truth was established, the strikes seamlessly fell.

Still, it poured upon those who obey him,

With grace, and granted victory upon those who resisted him.

If the honors of Quraysh have fortified,

Their merits shine within their pride, and they bear witness.

For he possesses a position within them, established firmly,

And a right for them that cannot be denied.

By him, the magnitude of royalty within them escalated,

As it musters its roots and elevates its rank.

And they knew that the caliphate has never belonged,

To follow anything but the creed that you pursue.

Reflections on Love

Reflection One:

Never search for a dream that has let you down. Do not linger too long on ruins; instead, strive to transform moments of brokenness into the beginnings of new dreams and a joyful life. Seek out the sound of new love that creeps in on dawn’s light from beyond the horizon. Do not dwell on leaves that have changed in color, turned brittle, and lost their vitality. Do not tire your soul excessively; after all, we are all transient beings.

Reflection Two:

Indeed, how difficult is the moment of farewell. In such instances, words cease, and tears become the sole expression of sorrow—the heart’s sadness and the eyes’ tears, all while recalling memories. Memories are the treasures we retain after parting, mingling smiles with tears and sometimes adding sorrow to the tears of separation. They capture years we shared with loved ones in but a moment, and the pain of farewell grows in proportion to our love for those we leave behind.

Messages of Love

Message One:

I despise the rituals of farewell.

Those we love are never truly departed.

This is because, in truth, we do not part from them.

Farewells were meant for strangers, not for those dear to us.

Message Two:

In every moment, we curse farewell a thousand times.

We shower it with blame and reproach.

Because it cuts our ties with those we adore and cherish.

Yet, have we ever stopped to place blame on the meetings?

Message Three:

Regret not the love you experienced, even if it has become a painful memory.

For if flowers have wilted, and their scent vanished,

And only thorns remain,

Do not forget they once gifted you a beautiful aroma that brought you joy.

Message Four:

I miss myself; I search for it yet find nothing. I extend both hands to embrace it, but it does not touch me…

I call out to it, but it cannot hear me…

I ask it, when will you come to me and bring me joy? Yes, you are my essence, oh you who are far from me…

So, waves, will you not stay with me? Isn’t the sorrow in my eyes visible? Be my strongest support.

And relay my love and longing to my cherished ones.
