A Poem on Parents by Poet Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi

My parents are those who govern

With my mother being the one I’ve learned from.

The most truthful names are from His generosity,

And the pledge of the most knowledgeable instructor.

Since we are of a purer essence,

With His generosity, the Most Generous.

From this, we derive wisdom,

In the ideal form that we learn.

Through His generosity, He has graced our existence,

The favored abode of blessings.

He turned it into the seal of all messages,

Gratitude for goodness for those who understand.

And there was no patience in praising Him,

Constrained by the name of the One who knows.

Following the example of the righteous parent,

He is the One who called you, O Muslim.

If only he had called you, O sinner,

You would not have been spared from His failure.

Through Him, you are sheltered from harm, so thank Him,

For the sun, stars, and planets.

Let His light shine upon the God of the heavens,

Gratitude to Him causes the enemy to crumble,

For He made her recognize her worth.

When her worshiper visits her cautiously.

The bonds of misguided ones are severed,

And the tether of Islam remains unbroken.

For since it has formed a bond,

No one else can unite it when it connects.

So accept the clarifications from its essence,

Returning to the root if it governs,

Recognizing the value of light with insight,

As darkness envelops his night.
