Hadiths of the Prophet on Morality
Numerous hadiths in the prophetic tradition emphasize the importance of moral character. Below are some notable examples:
- “There is nothing heavier on the Scale of the believer on the Day of Judgment than good character, for Allah Almighty detests the obscene and foul-mouthed.”
- “Virtue is good character.”
- “Indeed, Allah only shows mercy to His kind servants.”
- “Verily, honesty leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to tell the truth until he is recorded as a truthful person. Conversely, lying leads to transgression, and transgression leads to Hellfire. A man keeps lying until he is recorded as a liar in the sight of Allah.”
- “The most complete of believers in faith are those who possess the best character, and the best among you are those who are best to their women.”
- “Allah elevates a servant to the rank of fasting and prayer through their good character.”
Hadiths of the Prophet on Kindness to Orphans
The prophetic tradition also contains several hadiths highlighting the significance of kindness towards orphans. Some of these include:
- “I and the caretaker of an orphan will be like this in Paradise,” and he gestured with his index and middle finger, leaving a space between them.
- From Abu Umamah al-Bahili – may Allah be pleased with him –: “The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: Whoever strokes the head of an orphan solely for the sake of Allah will earn a reward for every hair that is touched by his hand. And whoever does good to an orphan or a person in need shall be with me in Paradise like these two,” as he joined his two fingers: the index and the middle finger.
- “The best house among the Muslims is a house in which an orphan is treated kindly, and the worst house is one in which an orphan is mistreated.”
Hadiths of the Prophet on Charity
Charity holds immense virtues in this world and the Hereafter. Here are some hadiths that illustrate this point:
- “Every day, two angels descend, with one saying: ‘O Allah, give the spender a replacement,’ while the other says: ‘O Allah, give the miser destruction.’”
- “Every person will remain in the shade of their charity until judgment is passed among the people.”
- “Seven people will be shaded by Allah on a day when there is no shade except His: a just ruler, a young person who grew up in the worship of Allah, a man whose heart is attached to the mosques, two men who love each other for the sake of Allah, meeting and parting for that reason, a man who is approached by a woman of high status and beauty but says: ‘I fear Allah,’ a man who gives in charity discreetly such that his left hand does not know what his right hand has spent, and a man who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes overflow with tears.”
- “Each one of you will speak to Allah, with no interpreter between them, and he will look to his right and see nothing but what he has forwarded, and he will look to his left and see nothing but what he has forwarded, and he will look ahead and see nothing but Hell in front of him. Therefore, fear the Fire, even if it be with half a date.”
- Charity is encapsulated in the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him: “Whoever alleviates the distress of a believer from the distresses of this world, Allah will alleviate his distress from the distress of the Day of Judgment, and whoever makes it easy for an insolvent person, Allah will make it easy for him in this world and the Hereafter.”
- “If a woman spends from the food of her household without causing harm, she earns a reward for what she spends, her husband earns from what he earns, and the treasurer earns likewise, without diminishing the rewards of any of them.”
