Morning Supplications and Remembrances
Quranic Verses for the Morning
Islamic prophetic traditions highlight specific verses and Quranic chapters that are recommended to be recited every morning. These include:
- Ayat al-Kursi: Allah – the Exalted – says: (Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great).
- Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas (recite three times): The Messenger of Allah – peace be upon him – advised a companion: (Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and the two Mu’awwidhat when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning three times, and they will suffice you in all matters):
- In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful: (Say, ‘He is Allah, [Who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.’).
- In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful: (Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak from the evil of that which He created, and from the evil of darkness when it settles, and from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of an envious when he envies.’).
- In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful: (Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer – who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind – of jinn and among mankind.’).
Morning Remembrances from Sunnah
There are numerous supplications recommended for Muslims to maintain in the morning, including:
- (We have entered the morning, and sovereignty belongs to Allah. There is no deity except Allah, alone with no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty, and to Him is all praise, and He is capable of all things. O Lord, I ask You for the good in this day and the good after it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil after it. O Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and the evil of old age. O Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the fire and punishment in the grave.)
- (O Allah, with You we greet the morning, and with You we greet the evening, with You we live, and with You we die, and to You is the final return.)
- (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being overpowered by debt and the tyranny of men.), recited three times.
- (In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing can cause harm in the heavens or on the earth, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.), recited three times.
- (Glory be to Allah and praise Him, by the number of His creation, by His pleasure, by the weight of His Throne, and by the ink of His words.), recited three times.
- The chief of seeking forgiveness: (O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no deity except You. You created me, and I am Your servant, and I am upon Your covenant as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favors upon me, and I acknowledge my sins, so forgive me, for none can forgive sins except You.)
- (O Allah, any blessing that I or anyone of Your creation has experienced today is from You alone; You have no partner; to You belongs all praise and gratitude.)
- (O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, cover my shortcomings, grant me peace of heart, guard me from my front, from my back, to my right, to my left, and from above me. I seek refuge in Your greatness from being attacked from beneath me.)
- (O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, I seek aid through Your mercy. Correct all my affairs and do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye.)
- (O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of all things and their Sovereign, I bear witness that there is no deity but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and the evil of Satan and his polytheism.)
- Recite سبحان الله و بحمده (100 times): The Prophet – peace be upon him – said: (Whoever says during the morning and evening: ‘Glory be to Allah and praise Him’ one hundred times will have no one arrive on the Day of Judgment with better than what he has brought, except someone who said the same or added to it.)
