Parts of the Lamp

External Components of the Lamp

Lamp Base

The lamp base (in English: The Base) is located at the bottom of the lamp and serves a crucial role in securing the lamp into an electrical socket, such as those found in ceilings. Additionally, it facilitates the transmission of electricity from the main power supply to the lamp’s circuit.

Glass Globe

The glass globe (in English: Globe) refers to the outer shell of the lamp, which encases all internal components. This part is typically constructed from glass, providing protection while allowing light to emanate.

Internal Components of the Lamp

Tungsten Filament

The tungsten filament (in English: tungsten wire) is a thin wire positioned at the center of the light bulb and is made from the chemical element tungsten. This wire conducts heat, causing the tungsten strands to reach a temperature where they glow, which produces light. Tungsten is favored for this application due to its high melting point, enabling it to endure extreme temperatures without melting.

Support Wires

Electrons follow a circular path within the lamp’s electrical circuit. To maintain the flow of electrons within this path, it is essential for all components of the circuit to be interconnected, a function fulfilled by the support wires (in English: Support Wires).

Invisible Gases

Invisible gases (in English: Invisible Gases) are present inside the light bulb and are not visible to the naked eye. These gases, such as argon (in English: Argon) or nitrogen (in English: Nitrogen), are often inert and play a critical role in preventing the tungsten filament from burning out. Additionally, they help to mitigate the atmospheric pressure on the glass globe, thereby protecting it from breakage.

Lamp Stem

The lamp stem (in English: Glass mount) is the central shaft of the lamp, constructed from glass. Its primary purpose is to provide support for the tungsten filament, ensuring it remains securely in place.
