Poem for the People of Eid

This poem titled “For the People of Eid” is by the esteemed poet Ibn al-Rumi, whose name was Ali bin al-Abbas bin Jirij or Georges al-Rumi. He was a prominent poet during the Abbasid era, akin to notable figures such as Al-Mutanabbi and Bashar. Born in 221 AH in Baghdad, he passed away in 283 AH under mysterious circumstances, reportedly poisoned due to a feud with Al-Qasim bin Ubaydullah over a past insult.

For the people, it’s a holiday; and for me, double the joy during Eid.

When I see you, O offspring of the noble,

As they celebrate two Eids in one year,

Your face makes each day a festive affair.

They say the crescent of Eid is here; I tell them,

Your face is a crescent always lit.

This crescent appears to me as an omen,

Countered by the crescent of your blessed presence.

Renew and recreate both Eids in blessings,

For the nights refuse to relent without rejuvenation.

If your company leads the Eid celebration,

Your absence is not missed on festive days.

Should you stand alone, distancing from the crowd,

You would still be everyone, as others feel left out.

Upon you rests the splendor of leadership,

Not due to armies or the burden of warriors.

You are the leader who seems to rise,

Without a decree from a known authority.

Governance is not for the greedy,

But for those who seek elevation and praise.

Is the leader not the one who shares victories,

While facing the adversities of life?

You stand firm against unfair odds,

O son of the noble, steadfast and backed.

Let exclusion or authority do as they wish,

For you shall live in the mercy of generosity.

This leadership is masterful in its essence,

Simple enough to bind, yet deeply rooted.

Bestowed gifts from Allah cannot be stripped,

Unlike unfair claims that are soon revoked.

If I were capable of reviving the dead,

Your generosity would bring all lives back to life.

What concerns you when time turns against you,

When your status remains in a curtain of envy?

Despite this, there is no difference between you two,

And that should hold true, even in returns.

Your brother stands strong against enemies,

A mountain unwavering in his foundations.

Both of you find strength in each other,

Bound and united by shared causes.

When both merge into a collective force,

They form an unbreakable integrated body.

In battles, should they unite,

They become an ongoing saga in history.

Surpassing every challenge together,

Neither seeks harm nor betrayal.

Hence, when you support each other’s ambitions,

Your shared honor emerges, distinctly recognized.

Both find joy in the accomplishments of the other,

As envy fades away among hearts grown cold.

All vicious tongues are turned still,

For the bonds of fraternity lay unshakeable.

May the warmth of unity remain,

While the schemes of enemies scatter with the wind!

If we recall Sufyan’s resilient bond,

You two are intertwined, right at the core.

Devoid of hindrance, you both flourish,

Each becoming a weapon in the defense.

Strong against foes, with hearts unwavering,

Foreheads adorned with the marks of battles.

For safety lies in the strivers dedicated,

And glory resides hand in hand with resolve.

%No life is without its struggles,

As none can contain the essence of peace.

Astray or gained beauty remains,

In shadows or in the fullest of light.

Despite challenging days, with a calm heart,

I strive, praying always for your ease.

Thus, may the days bridge together,

May we navigate these trials hand in hand.
