Prayers for Peace of Mind

Prayers for Tranquility

Numerous authentic Hadiths and forms of supplication can be found that relate to achieving mental peace and alleviating worries and hardships. Among these are the following:

  • (There is no god but Allah, the Mighty, the Forbearing; there is no god but Allah, the Lord of the Great Throne; there is no god but Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and the Lord of the Noble Throne, as narrated by Yazid: Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Noble Throne).
  • (Allah; Allah is my Lord, I do not associate anything with Him).
  • (O Allah, I am Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your maidservant; my forelock is in Your hand. Your decree is executed upon me, and Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that is Yours, which You named Yourself, revealed in Your Book, taught one of Your creatures, or reserved for Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, to make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the removal of my sorrow, and the departure of my worry).
  • It was narrated from Ubayy ibn Ka’b that he said: (When two-thirds of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would stand and say: O people, remember Allah! Remember Allah! The dreadful event has come followed by another dreadful event; death has come with what it carries. Ubayy said, I said: O Messenger of Allah, I pray for you abundantly, how much should I devote to you? He said: Whatever you wish. I said: A quarter. He said: Whatever you wish; if you increase, it is better for you. I said: A half. He said: Whatever you wish; if you increase, it is better for you. I said: Two-thirds. He said: Whatever you wish; if you increase, it is better for you. I said: I will devote all my prayer to you. He said: Then your worries will be taken away and your sins will be forgiven).
  • (O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this life and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, and my family and wealth. O Allah, conceal my shortcomings, grant me security from my fears, and protect me from my front, behind, right, left, above, and I seek refuge in You from being taken by surprise from below).
  • (Supplications of the distressed: O Allah, I hope for Your mercy; do not entrust me to myself even for the blink of an eye. Correct for me all of my affairs; there is no god but You).
  • (The supplication of Dhul-Nun while he was in the belly of the fish: There is no god but You, glorified are You; indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers).
  • (O Allah, I ask You as You are the Praised, there is no god but You, the Bestower, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of Glory and Honor, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, I ask You).
  • (O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens, Lord of the Great Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, You are the Manifest, and there is nothing above You; You are the Hidden, and there is nothing beneath You; Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Criterion, Splitter of the grain and the seed. I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything that You have taken by its forelock. You are the First, and there was nothing before You; You are the Last, and there is nothing after You. Settle our debts for us and provide us with plenty of means.).
  • It was narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (None of you supplicates with a supplication except that Allah grants him his request or averts from him a similar evil as long as he does not supplicate for a sin or severing the ties of kinship).
  • (Say: O Allah, suffice me with what is lawful instead of what is unlawful and enrich me by Your grace from others).
  • (O Allah, Master of the Kingdom, You bestow kingship upon whom You will, and You strip kingship from whom You will; You honor whom You will, and You vilify whom You will. In Your hand is good; indeed, You are over all things competent. You are the Most Merciful in this world and the Hereafter; You give to whom You will and deny whom You will. Have mercy on me with a mercy that will suffice me from the mercy of others).

Words for Peace of Mind

It is permissible to pray with supplications that were not mentioned by the Prophet (peace be upon him) with the intention of attaining inner peace. Among them are:

  • My Lord, I ask You to soothe my heart and mind, and to dispel the distractions of thought and reasoning. My Lord, You know the matters in my heart that no one else knows; fulfill them for me, O Merciful. Be with me in the toughest situations and show me the wonders of Your power in the hardest of days.
  • O Allah, we ask You for an increase in faith, blessings in our lifespans, health in our bodies, provision in abundance, repentance before death, and martyrdom at its time, forgiveness after death, pardon during the reckoning, security from punishment, and a share of paradise. Grant us the blessing of gazing upon Your noble face.
  • O Allah, You who facilitate the tough, You who soften the hard, You who fulfill the promise, and You who are involved in everything new every day, take me from the confined passage to the broad way. Through You, I repel what I cannot bear; there is no power and strength except through Allah, the Most High, the Supreme.
  • O Allah, to You I extend my hand, and my desire in what You possess is immense. So, accept my repentance, have mercy on my weakness, forgive my sins, accept my apology, and make me entitled to every good, guiding me to every good way through Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
  • O Allah, You are the Forbearing, so do not rush; You are the Generous, so do not withhold; You are the Mighty, so do not humiliate; You are the Powerful, so do not be overcome; and You are the Protector, so do not let me be defeated; and You are capable of all things.
  • O Allah, do not deprive us of Your vast mercy, Your abundant blessings, Your encompassing well-being, and Your bountiful gifts. Do not withhold Your favors from me because of my misdeeds, and do not punish me for my ill actions. Do not turn Your noble face away from me, through Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
  • O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the trials of this world; strengthen my faith.
  • O Allah, give me good news as You gave good news to Jacob about Joseph, and bring me joy as You brought joy to Zechariah about John.
  • O Allah, I ask You, You who relieve worry, You who remove sorrow, and You who respond to the supplication of the desperate, O Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter, have mercy on me with Your mercy.
  • O Allah, grant me contentment and peace of mind; do not break my back, do not make my needs difficult, and do not make my affairs great. O Allah, do not bend my stature, nor expose my secrets.
  • O Allah, if I disobeyed You openly, forgive me; if I disobeyed You secretly, protect me. Do not let my calamity be in my religion, and do not make this world my greatest concern. O Allah, do not let my trials be in my body, in my wealth, or in my family.
  • O Allah, conceal my faults and accept my missteps. Protect me from my front, and behind me, from my right and my left, from above and from below, and do not make me among the heedless.
  • O Allah, I ask You for patience in the face of destiny, for the companionship of martyrs, for the life of the happy, for victory over enemies, and for the company of the Prophets, O Lord of the worlds.
  • O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, O Light, O Most Holy, O Living God, O Most Merciful, forgive me the sins that bring down calamities, forgive me the sins that bring regret, forgive me the sins that withhold provisions, forgive me the sins that break the ties of kinship, forgive me the sins that cut off hope, forgive me the sins that hasten destruction, forgive me the sins that reject prayer, forgive me the sins that hold back the rain, forgive me the sins that darken the air, forgive me the sins that expose the veil. O Allah, I ask You, O Reliever of worry, O Remover of grief, Respondent to the supplication of the distressed, Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter, I ask You to have mercy on me with a mercy from You that will suffice me from the mercy of others.
  • O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin I have committed knowingly or unknowingly with my feet, my hands, my eyes, my ears, my words, or what I have wasted of what You provided me. Then, while in disobedience, I requested Your provision and You provided me. While seeking Your provision, I disobeyed You, yet You covered it for me, and when I asked for more, You did not deny me. You continue to return to me with Your forbearance and kindness, O Most Generous of the generous.
  • O Allah, I seek forgiveness for every sin I have committed in the brightness of the day or the darkness of the night, in private or in public, secret and open, while You are watching me.
  • O Allah, relieve me from every calamity, O Knower of every hidden matter, O Remover of every affliction. Rescue me, I call out to You with the supplication of one whose need is dire, whose strength is weak, and whose abilities are limited— the supplication of a drowning desperate person. O Allah, have mercy on me and aid me; protect me, grant me Your assistance. You are my refuge. I implore You by Your One name and Your Eternal Source, by Your Great name, relieve me from what I am in, through the night and the day, until thoughts and fears of any other than You do not cloud my mind, and I am not preoccupied with the hope of any besides You. Rescue me, rescue me, rescue me, O Allah. O Remover of grief and worry, Reliever of great burdens, You who when You desire a thing, You only say, “Be,” and it is. My Lord, my Lord, sins and transgressions have enveloped me, and I cannot find mercy or care from anyone but You; please grant me that mercy.
  • O Allah, Lord of Gabriel, Michael, Israfil, and Azrael, protect me from the trials of this world and guide me to what You love and are pleased with. Steadfast me in the firm word both in this life and in the Hereafter, and do not let me be led astray after You have guided me. Be my helper, my supporter, my guardian, and my defender.
  • O Allah, I ask You in my prayer and supplication for the blessings that will cleanse my heart, remove my troubles, forgive my sins, rectify my affairs, enrich my poverty, remove my evil, uncover my grief and melancholy, heal my ailments, settle my debts, and dispel my sorrows while gathering my scattered strength and brightening my face.
  • O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every obligatory act You have mandated upon me during the nights and days that I neglected, whether mistakenly, intentionally, by forgetfulness, ignorance, or lack of attention, and I ask Your forgiveness for every Sunnah of the Seal of the Messengers, our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that I have missed, whether out of negligence, oversight, forgetfulness, carelessness, ignorance, or indifference toward it. I seek the forgiveness of Allah and I turn to Allah in repentance for what is displeasing in word, action, internally, and externally.

The Importance of Prayer for Peace of Mind

The Quran contains numerous verses that emphasize the significance of prayer for alleviating distress and achieving tranquility. Among these verses are:

  • Allah Almighty says: (Is He not the One who responds to the oppressed when he calls upon Him and removes the evil and makes you successors on earth? Is there any god besides Allah? Little is it that you remember).
  • He says: (Indeed, whoever submits his face to Allah while doing good will have a reward with his Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve).
  • He also says: (And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the supplication of the supplicant when he calls upon Me; so let them respond to Me and believe in Me that they may be guided).
  • (So I said, ‘Seek forgiveness of your Lord; indeed, He is Forgiving. He will send [rain to] you in showers and increase you in strength.)
  • (And whoever believes and does righteous deeds will have the best reward and We will speak to him of Our command more easily.)
  • (Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.)
  • (And your Lord says, “Call upon Me; I will respond to you. Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell contemptible.)
  • (Or did you think that you would enter Paradise while you have not yet experienced the state of those who passed on before you? They met calamities and hardships and were shaken until the Messenger and those who believed with him said, “When will the victory of Allah come?” Unquestionably, the victory of Allah is near).
  • (Say, “Who delivers you from the darkness of land and sea? You invoke Him supplicating and in secret, ‘If He should save us from this, we will surely be among the thankful.’ Say, ‘Allah saves you from it and from every distress; then you invent [other] partners with Him.)
  • (And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins. And who can forgive sins except Allah? And [who] does not persist in what they have done while they know? Those are the ones who will be rewarded with forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. And excellent is the reward of the righteous.)
  • (And Dhul-Nun, when he went off angry and thought that We would not constrain him, then he called out in the darkness, “There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers).
