Abu Khalil Al-Qabbani
Abu Khalil Al-Qabbani is recognized as a pioneer of Arabic musical theater. Born in 1852 in Damascus, he established an Arabic theater in the city where he produced numerous theatrical performances and musical plays. Among his most famous works are Anis Al-Jalis, Harun Al-Rashid, and The Ungrateful. His work was significantly influenced by foreign theater and shadow play.
Tawfiq Al-Hakim
Tawfiq Al-Hakim was born in Alexandria in 1898 and is celebrated as a novelist, writer, and playwright. He authored numerous novels and plays, with his early theatrical works including The Heavy Guest and The New Woman. His writings are characterized by depth, imagination, and symbolism.
He worked with the newspaper Akhbar Al-Youm, publishing a series of his plays there. Later, he joined the Supreme Council for the Care of Arts and Literature in Egypt. In recognition of his significant contributions to the arts and literature, the Egyptian government awarded him the prestigious Order of the Republic. He also received the State Appreciation Prize in Literature in 1961. He passed away in Cairo in 1987.
George Abyad
Born on January 5, 1880, George Abyad was a prominent Lebanese actor and artist who excelled in both theater and cinema. He was the first president of the Actors Syndicate in Egypt. Abyad studied dramatic arts in France and translated several French plays, while also authoring around 130 plays. He was a trailblazer in film acting, starring in the first Arabic musical film, The Melody of the Heart, in 1932. He passed away on May 25, 1959.
Ahmad Shawqi
Ahmad Shawqi, born in 1868, is recognized as one of the founders of the poetic revival movement. He excelled in Arabic theatrical poetry and his works often drew upon social and political realities. His diverse body of work spans poetry, stories, and poetic plays. Notable plays include Antarah, Majnoun Layla, and Ladiyas. Shawqi composed poetry across various themes, including praise, elegy, love, description, and wisdom. He passed away in 1932.
Saadallah Wannous
Saadallah Wannous was born on March 27, 1941, and is a prominent Syrian playwright and writer. His works are known for their social and political critique of realities in the Arab world. He played a significant role in establishing the Higher Institute for Dramatic Arts in Damascus, where he later served as a professor. He also published the magazine Life of Theater. Among his important works are The Rape, Historical Miniatures, and The King is the King. Wannous passed away in 1997.
