Verses for Overcoming Severe Distress

Quranic Verses for Relieving Distress

There are numerous verses from the Quran that provide comfort and aid in alleviating worries. These verses can be recited to help relieve distress, including the following:

  • Allah, the Exalted, says: (Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them believed in Allah and His angels and His Books and His messengers, [saying], ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they said, ‘We hear and we obey. [Grant us] Your forgiveness, our Lord. To You is the final destination. Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, notes: (And [mention] Job when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.’ So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity and We gave him his family, twice as many, as a mercy from Us and a lesson for people of reason.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, shares: (So he called out in the darkness, ‘There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.’ And We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, proclaims: (So I said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is Forgiving. He will send rain from the sky upon you in [continuing] showers and give you increase in wealth and children and make for you gardens and make for you rivers.)

Quranic Verses on Tranquility and Reassurance

Several Quranic verses convey feelings of comfort, tranquility, and relaxation of the heart, including the following:

  • Allah, the Exalted, says: (Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: (Is one whose breast Allah has expanded to [contain] Islam, so he is upon a light from his Lord [like one whose heart is hardened]? So woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah. Those are in clear error.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, explains: (It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [existing] faith. And to Allah belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth, and ever is Allah Knowing and Wise.)
  • Allah, the Exalted, reminds: (Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast? And We removed from you your burden, which had weighed upon your back, and raised high for you your repute? For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. And to your Lord direct your longing.)

Supplications for Relieving Distress from the Sunnah

There are several supplications from the Sunnah that Muslims can invoke to relieve distress and ease their affairs, including the following:

  • (O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your Hand; Your decree over me is continuously executed, and Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that is Yours, that You have named Yourself with, or that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You have taught to one of Your creatures, or that You have kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the removal of my sadness, and the departure of my worry.)
  • (Sufficient for me is Allah; there is no deity except Him. Upon Him I have depended, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.)
  • (O Allah, I hope for Your mercy. Do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye, and rectify for me all of my affairs. There is no deity except You.)
