Causes of Bumps on the Head

Acne

Many individuals experience acne at some point in their lives, which can appear on various parts of the body such as the face, back, hands, and even the scalp. While it is uncommon to see numerous acne spots on the scalp, it is not unusual for one or two to occur. Acne on the scalp can be particularly bothersome as it often causes itching and discomfort, in addition to feelings of embarrassment—especially for men, whose short hair exposes the scalp more readily.

Causes of Scalp Acne

Although the occurrence of acne on the scalp is not as prevalent as on the face or back, it develops in a similar manner, primarily due to blocked pores resulting from excess dead skin cells or sebum production. The skin naturally produces a protective oily substance called “sebum,” which travels to the skin’s surface through the pores. However, when these pores become blocked, bacteria can thrive in the trapped sebum, leading to the emergence of acne. Over time, this can result in a significant outbreak on the scalp. Hormonal fluctuations, stress, and anxiety can also contribute to scalp acne, and in some cases, it may arise from an allergic reaction to hair care products such as shampoos or conditioners.

Treating Scalp Acne

There are several natural remedies you can employ to treat scalp acne:

  • Aloe Vera: Renowned for its effectiveness in addressing acne issues, aloe vera can be used in various forms—whether raw, as a gel extract, or in oil form. It is applied by massaging it onto the scalp until the acne diminishes completely.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Known for its potent acne-fighting properties, apple cider vinegar can be used by diluting it with water and gently massaging it into the scalp. Leave it on for about five minutes before rinsing thoroughly. This remedy can be applied daily or three times a week until the acne subsides.
  • Tea Tree Oil: This oil can be added to your regular shampoo, aiding in the rapid reduction of acne. It should be used each time you wash your hair.
  • Tar Soap: This simple method involves using tar soap instead of commercial shampoos during washing.
  • Cleaning Acne Areas: It’s essential to clean areas surrounding the acne using alcohol or another antiseptic, as the scalp is sensitive and requires careful maintenance.
  • Consulting a Doctor: For persistent cases that do not respond to over-the-counter treatments, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for appropriate medications and creams to eliminate the acne.
