Poem About Friday
In “A Friday,” the poet Ibrahim Nagy, an Egyptian born in 1898 in the Shubra district of Cairo, reflects on solitude. Nagy studied medicine before working in various governmental positions, including the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Health, eventually becoming the chief medical supervisor for the Ministry of Awqaf. In addition to his medical training, he studied prosody and rhyme. Some of his notable collections include “Behind the Clouds,” “Cairo Nights,” “In the Temple of Night,” and “The Injured Bird,” which have all significantly influenced Arabic literature.

Reflections on Friday
First Reflection:
Have you ever contemplated Friday deeply? Muslims wake up in the morning, each performing ablution—a Sunnah—and then heading to the mosque to recite Surah Al-Kahf while waiting for the Friday Prayer. The sermon guides them spiritually for the week ahead, clarifies their limits, reminds them of Paradise and the aspirations to reach it, and urges them towards good deeds and righteous dealings. After the prayer, they greet each other on this day, a moment when all come together after being absorbed in their busy lives. They return home to dine together, discussing their affairs. This day of the week is indeed filled with blessings, light, and happiness.
Second Reflection:
Friday is a remarkable spiritual station; do not let it pass without a positive change within you. Allah has distinguished this day from above the seven heavens, so make it special for yourself and those around you. It is a day ripe with blessings and supplications—a golden opportunity for sincere repentance. A blessed day for those who experience it, and a blessed day for those who depart on it, so always pray for its blessings from Allah.
Third Reflection:
In the Quran, there is a surah named “Friday,” where Allah calls upon His servants, saying: “O you who have believed, when the call to prayer is proclaimed on the day of Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade.” (Surah Al-Jumu’ah: 9). This is an invitation to detach from worldly matters, to reflect on the Hereafter, and to strengthen your faith by attending the Friday gathering, which is replete with many lessons.
Fourth Reflection:
Allah has made the dawn of Friday a beacon, its noon a source of joy, its afternoon a time for glad tidings, and its evening a time for forgiveness. He has granted you requests never to be rejected and provided you with unmeasured sustenance, opening a door to paradise that is never closed. O Lord, awaken him during the most beloved times to You, that he might remember You and be remembered by You; that he might seek Your forgiveness and thus be forgiven; that he might request from You and receive; that he might ask for Your support and be supported; and that he might love You and be loved by You. I testify that I love him for Your sake, so protect him and safeguard his faith, continuously bring joy to his heart, and bless him on his Friday. Amen, O Lord of the worlds.
