Etiquette and Regulations of Mosques
It is essential for individuals attending mosques to embody the proper etiquette and understand the relevant religious rulings associated with them. Below are some key aspects to consider:
- Arriving early at the mosque is encouraged. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) urged believers to hasten to the mosques, highlighting the significant rewards for doing so.
- Walking with calmness and humility towards the mosque is advisable. A Muslim should approach the mosque with a tranquil mind, as this fosters greater concentration during prayer.
- Reciting the recommended supplications while walking to the prayer, as well as upon entering and exiting the mosque, is commendable.
- When entering the mosque, one should step in with the right foot and exit with the left foot.
- It is commendable for a Muslim to remain seated in the mosque while waiting for prayer, specifically during the time between the call to prayer (adhan) and the commencement of the prayer (iqamah).
- A Muslim is permitted to lie down in the mosque, provided they ensure modesty is maintained.
- Taking a nap within the mosque is acceptable.
- Casual conversations about permissible worldly matters during one’s time in the mosque are allowed.
- It is permissible to eat and drink while in the mosque.
- Displaying one’s best appearance is encouraged during Friday prayers and the two Eid celebrations.
- Reciting permissible poetry or engaging in beneficial games, such as fencing or similar activities, is allowed, provided the intent is not merely for frivolous amusement.
Salat al-Tahiyyat (Prayer of Greeting) for the Mosque
Many scholars agree on the Sunnah of praying two units of prayer upon entering the mosque. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated: “When one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit until he offers two rak’ahs.” The consensus leans towards it being a confirmed Sunnah, although some scholars, like Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him), argue that considering it obligatory is a strong viewpoint, with the more widely accepted view being that it is indeed a confirmed Sunnah.
