Hadiths About the Most Rewarding Deeds in the Eyes of Allah
Deeds Highly Valued by Allah – Exalted Be He
Allah – Exalted Be He – has designated certain deeds as more virtuous than others. This is evident from the narration by the revered companion Abu Huraira – may Allah be pleased with him – who reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was asked: “Which deeds are the best?” He replied: “Faith in Allah.” The questioner then asked: “Then what?” The Prophet responded: “Striving in the path of Allah.” Again the questioner inquired: “Then what?” The Prophet said: “A righteous pilgrimage.” In another narration by Muhammad ibn Ja’far, he stated: “Faith in Allah and His Messenger.”
Additionally, the esteemed companion Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him – recounted that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): “Which deeds are most beloved to Allah?” He answered: “The prayer performed on time.” Abdullah then asked: “What comes next?” The Prophet replied: “Being dutiful to one’s parents.” Abdullah followed up with: “What else?” The Prophet stated: “Striving in the path of Allah.” He then mentioned that he was told these deeds, and if he had asked for more, he would have been given additional information.
One of the significant hadiths regarding commendable actions is from Abu Huraira – may Allah be pleased with him – who affirmed that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “A Muslim is one from whom other Muslims are safe from their tongue and hands, and a believer is one whom people can trust regarding their blood and wealth.”
The Virtue of Fasting as an Esteemed Worship
Evidence from the Sunnah regarding fasting includes:
- As narrated by Abu Huraira – may Allah be pleased with him – the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “My beloved advised me on three matters: to fast three days each month, to pray the Duha prayer, and to offer the Witr prayer before sleeping.”
- Abdullah ibn Amr – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Worship the Most Merciful, feed the hungry, and spread peace, so that you may enter Paradise in peace.” Jaber ibn Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – stated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “A Muslim is one from whom other Muslims are safe from their tongue and hands.”
- Mother of the Believers, Aisha bint Abi Bakr – may Allah be pleased with both – related that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are few.”
- Abu Huraira – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Allah has said: ‘Whoever shows enmity towards a friend of Mine, I declare war against him. And My servant does not draw nearer to Me with anything more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him, and My servant continues to draw nearer to Me with voluntary acts until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. If he asks of Me, I will surely give him; if he seeks refuge in Me, I will surely grant him refuge. There is nothing I hesitate to do more than I hesitate to take the soul of a believer; he dislikes death, and I dislike hurting him.’
- Abu Huraira – may Allah be pleased with him – also narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I have seen a man enjoying the pleasures of Paradise because he removed a tree that was causing harm to people from the road.”
