Causal Style in the Holy Quran Using “Indeed, Only”
Below are several verses from the Quran that illustrate the causal style employing the expression “Indeed, only”:
- {And when it is said to them, “Do not cause corruption on the earth,” they say, “Indeed, we are but reformers.”}
- {And when they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe,” but when they are alone with their devils, they say, “Indeed, we are with you; we were merely mocking.”}
- {And among people and creatures and grazing livestock are various colors. Thus, only those of His servants who have knowledge fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and All-Forgiving.}
- {Say, “Indeed, I am a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your God is one God. So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.”}
- {Say, “O mankind, indeed, I am to you a clear warner.”}
- {Indeed, I have been commanded to worship the Lord of this city, who has forbidden it, and to Him belongs everything. And I have been commanded to be of the Muslims and to recite the Quran. So whoever is guided is only guided for himself, and whoever goes astray, say, “Indeed, I am only one of the warners.”}
- {Say, “Indeed, I am a warner, and there is no deity except Allah, the One and Irresistible.”}
- {So if they believe in the like of what you believe in, then they have been rightly guided; but if they turn away, they are indeed in dissension, and Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.}
- {And those who have disbelieved say, “If only a sign had been sent down to him from his Lord.” Say, “Indeed, you are only a warner, and for every people is a guide.”}
- {So perhaps you will leave out some of what is revealed to you and your chest is constrained by it because they say, “If only a treasure had been sent down to him, or an angel had come with him.” Say, “Indeed, you are but a warner, and Allah is, over all things, Disposer of Affairs.”}
- {Indeed, repentance is with Allah for those who do evil in ignorance and then repent soon after. Those are the ones to whom Allah will turn in mercy, and Allah is All-Knowing and Wise.}
- {O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers and do not say, “Three; desist – it is better for you! Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of Affairs.”}
- {O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.}
Causal Style in the Holy Quran Using Negation and Exception
Here are some Quranic verses that illustrate the causal style through the use of negation and exception:
- {Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge – [that He is] maintaining creation in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.}
- {And Muhammad is not but a messenger. There have been other messengers before him. So if he were to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels? And whoever turns back on his heels will not harm Allah at all; and Allah will reward the grateful.}
- {Not upon you is their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills. And whatever good you spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking the face of Allah. And whatever good you spend will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.}
- {And when the believers saw the confederates, they said, “This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth.” And it only increased them in faith and acceptance.}
- {You are not anything but a human like us; so bring us a sign if you should be among the truthful.}
- {Have they not reflected upon themselves? Allah created the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in truth and for an appointed term. Yet many people deny they will meet their Lord.}
- {And We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of Allah. And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, O Muhammad, and asked forgiveness of Allah, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful.}
- {And to Allah belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth. And the matter of the Hour is not but like the blinking of an eye, or is it closer. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.}
Causal Style in the Holy Quran by Prioritizing What is Due to Be Delayed
Beneath are verses from the Quran that embody prioritizing what is rightfully due to be delayed:
- {They said, “Allah has taken a son.” Exalted is He! He is the Self-Sufficient; to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Do you have upon this any authority? Do you say about Allah that which you do not know?”}
- {Upon Allah do we place our trust. Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of deciders.}
- {There is no in it any [harsh] speech, and they will not be asked to drink thereof.}
- {For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.}
- {It is You we worship, and You we ask for help.}
- {And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is, over all things, competent.}
- {To Him will you all be returned, a true promise of Allah. Indeed, He begins creation and then will return it to Him, to reward those who have believed and done righteous deeds in justice. And for those who have disbelieved, they will have a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment for what they used to deny.}
