The Battle of Uhud in the Holy Quran
The Battle of Uhud is regarded as one of the most significant confrontations that the Muslims engaged in against the Quraysh tribe during the third year after Hijra (migration). This battle was named after Mount Uhud, which is the location near Medina where the conflict took place. Most of the Quranic verses that discuss the events of Battle of Uhud are found in Surah Al-Imran.
Quranic Verses on the Number of Muslims and Their Purpose
There was a considerable disparity between the Muslim army and the Quraysh forces: the Muslims numbered around 700, while the Quraysh could field approximately 3,000 warriors. This imbalance caused concern among some Muslims, prompting a divine response in the following verses:
- Allah, the Almighty, states: (Remember when you said to the believers, “Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels, sent down?”).
- He also mentions: (Indeed, if you remain patient and conscious of Allah, and the enemy comes upon you, your Lord will send you five thousand angels, marked [for battle]”).
- He further says: (And Allah did not make this except as good tidings for you and to reassure your hearts with it; and victory is only from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise).
- Additionally, He affirms: (But Allah is your protector, and He is the best of helpers).
Quranic Verses Concerning the Events of the Battle of Uhud
The events during the Battle of Uhud were intense and strategically complex, showcasing multiple military maneuvers. The following Quranic verses illustrate this:
- Allah, the Exalted, says: (And certainly, Allah fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission, until when you lost heart and quarrelled about the order and disobeyed after He had shown you what you love. Among you are those who desire this world, and among you are those who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you away from them to test you, and indeed He forgave you; and Allah is the possessor of great bounty upon the believers).
- He continues: (When you were ascending and did not turn to anyone, while the Messenger was calling you from behind you. So He gave you grief upon grief that you might not grieve for what had escaped you nor for what had afflicted you. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do).
- He further adds: (Then after grief, He sent down upon you security and slumber which covered a group of you. And another group was troubled by their own selves, thinking about Allah thoughts of ignorance, saying, “Is there anything for us in this affair?” Say, “Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allah.” They conceal within themselves what they do not disclose to you, saying, “If there was anything for us in this affair, we would not have been killed here.” Say, “Even if you had been in your homes, those for whom death was decreed would have gone out to their beds.” And to test what is in your breasts and to purify what is in your hearts. And Allah is Knowing of that which is within the breasts).
Quranic Reflections on the Battle of Uhud
The following verses highlight the precious nature of Allah’s bounty and remind that death is the inevitable end for every human. They also reflect on the fate of the disbelievers in the Battle of Badr and provide an admonition against despair and sorrow:
- Allah, the Most High, reassures: (And do not weaken or grieve, for you will surely be superior if you are true believers).
- He reminds: (If a wound should touch you, a wound has touched the people; and those days [of varying fortune] We alternate among the people, that Allah may make evident those who believe and may take to Himself from you martyrs. And Allah does not like the wrongdoers).
- He continues: (And you had indeed wished for death before you met it; and indeed you have seen it while you were looking on).
- He affirms: (And it is not for a soul to die except by permission of Allah at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world – We give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter – We give him thereof. And we will reward the grateful).
- He questions: (Or did you think that you would enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made evident those of you who strive and made evident those who are patient?).
