Names of the Plains of Palestine

Plaestinian Coastal Plains

The Palestinian coastal plains stretch along the Mediterranean Sea, covering a distance of 244 kilometers. They begin in the north at Ras al-Naqoura and extend to the south, reaching the city of Rafah. It is notable that these coastal plains become narrower in the north and gradually widen toward the south. These plains constitute approximately 13% of the total area of Palestine. Some key examples include:

  • Acre Plain: Located in the far northern part of Palestine, this plain spans 42 kilometers in length, with a width varying between 6 to 12 kilometers. Its total area is 316 square kilometers, and it lies at an elevation of 100 to 150 meters above sea level.
  • Carmel Plain: This plain stretches from Cape Carmel to Atlit, following the course of the Alexander River. It has a length of 35 kilometers and a total area of 70 square kilometers.
  • Southern Coastal Plain: Extending from the foothills of Mount Carmel near Haifa to the city of Rafah, this plain covers an area of 3,220 square kilometers, with a length of 147 kilometers and a width ranging from 20 to 35 kilometers. It widens further to 50 kilometers near the city of Gaza.

Palestinian Internal Plains

Palestine is also home to several internal plains, including:

  • Marj Ibn Amer Plain: This triangular-shaped plain is bordered by Haifa, Jenin, and Tiberias, measuring 40 kilometers in length and 19 kilometers in width, with a total area of 351 square kilometers.
  • Hattin Plain: Located in the lower Galilee plateau, this plain is historically significant, as it was the site of the Battle of Hattin, where Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi defeated the Crusaders.
  • Batuf Plain: This plain separates the Upper Galilee mountains from the Lower Galilee mountains, measuring 15 kilometers in length and a width of 3 to 5 kilometers, with a total area of 52 square kilometers.

Other Palestinian Plains

In addition to the previously mentioned plains, Palestine features several others, such as:

  • The mountains of Nablus are interspersed with several plains, including:
    • The Arraba Plain.
    • The Sanur Plain (Marj al-Gharq).
    • The Mukhna Plain, which extends along the eastern base of Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim.
  • Ajfi Plain: Situated in the southern and central area of the Negev triangle.
