The Maliki School of Thought

The Maliki school is named after Imam Malik ibn Anas, one of the four main Islamic legal schools. It embraces the legal opinions of Imam Malik. Imam al-Shafi’i famously stated, “No book has appeared on earth after the Book of Allah that is more authentic than the book of Malik,” a remark made even before the emergence of Sahih al-Bukhari.

About Imam Malik ibn Anas

  • Abu Abdullah Malik ibn Anas ibn Malik ibn Abi Amir al-Madani, he is a prominent Islamic jurist and the founder of the Maliki school of thought.
  • He was renowned for his extensive knowledge and mastery of prophetic traditions, born in Medina in the year 93 AH.
  • Imam Malik memorized the Qur’an in his early years and dedicated himself to studying the prophetic traditions and Islamic jurisprudence.
  • He established a teaching circle in the Prophet’s Mosque to offer lessons, legal opinions, and counsel. He was known for his humility in admitting uncertainty, often stating, “I am only a human who may err or be correct.”
  • Imam Malik passed away in the year 179 AH and was laid to rest in Al-Baqi Cemetery.
