Morning and Evening Remembrances
Below are the recommended morning and evening remembrances:
- “We have entered the evening and the dominion belongs to Allah. All praise is due to Allah; there is no deity but Allah, He is alone with no partner. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this night and the good it contains, and I seek refuge in You from its evils and the evils it holds. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, old age, the evil of senility, the trials of this world, and the torment of the grave.” Upon waking, one should say: “We have entered the morning and the dominion belongs to Allah.”
- Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and the last two chapters of the Quran (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas). Abdullah ibn Khabeeb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “We went out on a rainy and very dark night looking for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to pray with us. When we found him, he said, ‘Say.’ But I did not say anything. He said again, ‘Say.’ I again did not respond. Finally, he said, ‘Say.’ I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what should I say?’ He replied, ‘Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and the two chapters of refuge three times in the evening and morning; these will suffice you against everything.’
- “In the Name of Allah, with Whose name nothing harmful can occur on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” Repeat three times.
- “We awake on the Fitrah of Islam, on the statement of sincerity, on the religion of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and on the creed of our father Ibrahim, who was a true Muslim and not of those who associate others with Allah.” Upon evening, he states: “We have entered the evening on the Fitrah of Islam.”
Remembrances for Leaving and Entering Home
Remembrances for leaving home:
- “In the Name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from going astray, being led astray, falling, being pushed, wronging others, being wronged, being ignorant, or having ignorance shown towards me.”
- “In the Name of Allah, there is no might and no power except with Allah. Whatever Allah wills, I put my trust in Allah; Allah is sufficient for me and He is the best disposer of affairs.” This narration is weak but is still enacted in acts of virtue.
Remembrances for entering the home include peace and the evidence thereof:
- The Almighty said: “When you enter houses, greet yourselves with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good.”
- Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “When a man enters his house and remembers Allah at the time of entering and when eating, the devil says: ‘You have no place to stay and no supper here.’ But when he enters and does not remember Allah, the devil says: ‘You have made your stay here and supper is served.’

Travel and Riding Remembrances
We will outline the remembrances for travel and riding:
- Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) reported: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would say when he mounted his camel or donkey for travel: ‘Allahu Akbar’ three times, then say: ‘Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could not have done that by ourselves. Indeed, we will return to our Lord. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey and for actions that You accept from us. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion in travel and the Guardian for our families. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, evil sights, and a bad return in wealth and family.’ When returning, he would say these and add: ‘Returning repentant, worshipping, and praising our Lord.’
- Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) also said: “When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would return from expedition, pilgrimage, or Umrah, he would proclaim ‘Allahu Akbar’ three times at every elevated point, then remark: ‘There is no deity but Allah, He is alone with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion; to Him belongs praise; and He is capable over all things. We return, repentant, worshipping, prostrating to our Lord, praising Him; Allah has fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.’
- Ali ibn Rabi’a reported: “I witnessed Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a mount to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he stated: ‘In the Name of Allah,’ and when he mounted, he praised Allah. Then he said: ‘Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could not have done that by ourselves. Indeed, we will return to our Lord.’ Next, he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah’ three times, followed by ‘Allahu Akbar’ three times. Then he said: ‘Subhanaka Allahumma! I have wronged myself; forgive me, for no one can forgive sins except You.’ Then he laughed. They asked, ‘O Commander of the Faithful, what made you laugh?’ He replied: ‘I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) do as I did, and then he laughed.’

Remembrances for Sleep
Here are the remembrances for sleep:
- Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “When the Prophet (peace be upon him) would go to bed every night, he would gather his hands, blow into them, and recite: {Say: He is Allah, [who is] One} and {Say: I seek refuge in [Allah], the Lord of daybreak} and {Say: I seek refuge in [Allah], the Lord of mankind}. Then he would wipe over whatever parts of his body he could, starting with his head and face and whatever parts were exposed, repeating this three times.”
- Ayat Al-Kursi.
- The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.

O Allah, there is no preventer of what You give, and no giver of what You prevent, and he is of no avail to You, the helper.’
- Hudhayfah ibn Al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with them) said: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) would say in his bowing: ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great.’ In his prostration, he would say: ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.’

Remembrances in the Mosque
- Supplication for entering the mosque: “O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.”
- Supplication for leaving the mosque: “O Allah, I ask You for Your bounty.”
Scholars have compiled numerous works on the remembrances of a Muslim, including the famous “Al-Adhkar” by Al-Nawawi and “The Actions of the Day and Night” by Al-Nasai. This is due to the extensive number of remembrances available, supported by many narrations containing these remembrances.
