Harmful Effects of Facial Scrubs

Impact of Exfoliating on Acne

Many individuals who struggle with acne believe that exfoliating their skin will improve its condition. However, this approach can sometimes exacerbate the problem. Although facial exfoliators provide a sense of cleanliness, unclog pores, and reduce blackheads and acne, they are not particularly effective for treating deeper acne lesions. This is due to the superficial nature of exfoliation, which targets minor breakouts but cannot penetrate deep enough to address the root of acne within the skin. Exfoliators may prove beneficial if they contain specific acne treatments, yet aggressive exfoliation can lead to increased irritation, redness, and inflammation. If the acne is already inflamed, it is advisable to avoid exfoliating altogether.

Altering Skin pH Levels

The use of lemon and baking soda as facial exfoliants is often seen as a useful method for brightening the skin, fading dark spots, and combating acne. However, this combination can damage the skin by altering its pH levels. The normal pH level for skin ranges between 4 and 6, indicating a slightly acidic environment. Using baking soda can significantly raise this pH level, resulting in various skin issues such as peeling, increased acne, and dermatitis. Additionally, vigorously rubbing this mixture on the skin can enhance sensitivity. While lemon can help balance the pH of baking soda, determining the appropriate amount is not straightforward, and even a small excess of either ingredient can be harmful. Researchers have found that the concentrations of citric acid and vitamin C present in lemon are insufficient to penetrate deeply enough into the skin to deliver the desired benefits.

Irritation of Dry Skin

People often exfoliate dry skin to eliminate flaking and rough patches; however, excessive exfoliation can lead to further irritation and dryness. It is generally recommended to exfoliate once to three times a week while avoiding scrubs that contain abrasive particles, as these can damage the skin.
