Friendship
Is there a greater blessing than having a friend? A friend who feels like a brother accompanies you on the long journey of life, sharing moments of joy and sorrow, and creating beautiful memories that remain unforgettable. In this article, we present some Iraqi poetry that celebrates friendship.
Excerpts from Iraqi Poetry
I have a word in my mind that I cannot hide
They say time is fleeting, but I believe time is fulfilling
They say friendship can drift apart and come together over the years
But I believe that hearts are stronger between our feelings
A friendship that made me feel the delicacy of its meanings
I wrote a story of loyalty that I record in my writings
Oh, how everything precious in this world cannot compare to her
A friend who has stood by me when hardship came and time grew harsh
May God fill her life with joy and all her wishes
May He fulfill them and keep her heart pure
And may the Almighty preserve her for eyes that constantly seek her
And our companionship may remain sufficient throughout the ages
And blessings upon Muhammad as many as the calls of those who call to him
On the day of distress, the day when a servant calls upon our Lord in humility
Liars deceive my hopes, my companion with a great reputation
The friend who was there for every need has now vanished
Need summoned me, and I came to your door
I revealed a secret that I held in my heart
I need you to rescue me from this diminishing state
God help me with what I have kept hidden
You promised me, but it seems you have forgotten
You neglected your promise, my friend, and disregarded it
You treated me as if I were a mistake
As I greet you warmly, you rebuke me
But tell him I have become weak
And what I built through friendship, I have now shattered
When my heart was tight, for the sake of honor, I ventured
Rivers of worries have overwhelmed me, and I have cried
And I returned to the ancestral land to find solace
I walk during the day while the night retreats
And if I see a seat of disgrace, I turn away from it
And my soul has refrained from further humiliation
I will not accept disgrace even if I feel it deeply
Patience is strength, and the grace of a friend? Silence.
Iraqi Poetry About Friends
What does your friend mean to you?
He’s a companion who never tires of me
Tell me more, please clarify
He shows me the way, making it easier to navigate
I’m asking you about your friend
He’s a brother, and I’ve never seen a better day
What about your friend?
He’s precious, and my heart sinks when he’s away
Oh, my friend, what about your friend?
He’s my pillar, my heart pleads for him to stay
Tell me, have you calculated it well?
He’s been through good and ill with me
What does your friend mean to you?
He’s treacherous yet supports me in disguise
Just clarify more
His bitter words calm my woes
I’m asking you about your friend
He’s spiteful, eager to see my downfall
What does your friend mean to you?
He’s just complaining, speaking ill of my chances
Your friend is not your enemy
How do I rise when I stumble in sorrow?
This is the reality of every friend; let me advise you
I don’t want you to be upset
Because with a single word from my friend, my hair turns grey
My back has been broken, my tears have stilled
You’re my partner, my friend; you’ve consumed my life
Because a friend can betray, and my spirit yields
I thought of his intrigues, and they proved true
And my friend’s role in friendship became evident
Because in times of sweetness, I found him there
And when he left, he shut the door
Because with me, I sacrifice, take my spirit
And he’s imprisoned in betrayal, from which he strives.
But as the dagger strikes, he completes the betrayal.
