Quranic Verses on the Sacred Months
General Verses About the Sacred Months
Allah Almighty has revealed several verses concerning the sacred months. These verses highlight their significance and importance:
- Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah: (The sacred month is to be respected as it deserves, and the violations of sanctity have retribution. Whoever commits an aggression against you, respond with equivalent aggression and fear Allah. Know that Allah is with the righteous).
- (Hajj is performed during specific months. Therefore, whoever has intended to perform Hajj should not engage in sexual relations, immorality, or disputes during Hajj. And whatever good you do, Allah is aware of it. Take provisions, but the best provision is righteousness. So, fear Me, O people of understanding).
- (They ask you about fighting in the sacred month. Say: Fighting in it is a great transgression, and turning others away from the path of Allah, disbelief in Him, and the Sacred Mosque, as well as the expulsion of its inhabitants, is greater in the sight of Allah. And turmoil is more severe than killing. They will continue to fight you until they can turn you back from your religion, if they are able. And whoever among you turns back from their religion and dies as a disbeliever, their deeds will be nullified in this world and the Hereafter, and they will be among the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein forever).
- (O you who have believed, do not violate the rites of Allah or the sacred month or the offerings or the garlands or those going to the Sacred House seeking the bounty and pleasure of their Lord. And when you are free from restrictions, you may hunt. And let not the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Haram incite you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in punishment).
- Allah states in Surah Al-Ma’idah: (Allah has made the Kaaba, the Sacred House, a sanctuary for people, and the sacred month, and the offerings and garlands. This is so you may know that Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, and that Allah is Knowing of all things).
Special Rules Pertaining to the Sacred Months
Allah -the Almighty- has also revealed specific rules related to the sacred months. The following verses highlight these regulations:
- Allah mentions in Surah At-Tawbah: (So travel freely in the land for four months, and know that you cannot escape Allah, and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers).
- (And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, then let them go on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful).
- (Indeed, the number of months stipulated by Allah is twelve months in the Book of Allah the Day He created the heavens and the earth. Of them, four are sacred. That is the correct religion. So do not wrong yourselves therein and fight the polytheists all together as they fight you all together. And know that Allah is with the righteous).
- (Indeed, postponing is an increase in disbelief by which those who disbelieve are led astray. They allow it one year and prohibit it another year to align with the number Allah has prohibited. Thus, they permit what Allah has made unlawful; their evil deeds have been made pleasing to them. And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people).
- Allah commands in Surah Al-Hajj: (And proclaim to the people the Hajj. They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, coming from every distant road).
- (So that they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah during the known days over what He has provided them of the sacrificial animals. So eat from them and feed the needy and the poor. Then let them complete their rites and fulfill their vows and perform Tawaf around the Ancient House. That is, and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah, it is best for him in the sight of his Lord. And the animals have been made lawful to you except for what is recited to you. So avoid the abomination of idols and avoid false speech).
- (That is, and whoever honors the symbols of Allah, indeed, it is from the piety of the hearts. For you therein are benefits for a time specified; then their place of sacrifice is to the Ancient House. And for every nation We have appointed a rite that they may mention the name of Allah over what He has provided them of sacrificial animals. So your God is One God; to Him alone submit. And give good tidings to the humble).
