Morning Prayers for Friday
It is important to note that there is no specific prayer established in the prophetic tradition (Sunnah) or in the Holy Quran that is explicitly recommended for recitation on Friday mornings. However, worshippers are encouraged to supplicate to Allah (the Exalted) using any prayer they prefer, whether it is a well-known invocation or one they create themselves. Below are some suggestions for prayers that can be recited on this blessed day.
Prayers from the Holy Quran
Several verses from the Quran can be recited on Friday mornings with the intention of supplication. These include:
- “Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or made a mistake. Our Lord, lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us.”
- “Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.”
- “My Lord, grant me righteous offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.”
- “Our Lord, forgive us our sins and excesses in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”
- “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and admit me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants.”
Prayers from the Prophetic Tradition
Several invocations from the Sunnah are suitable for recitation on Friday mornings, including:
- “We have entered the evening and the dominion belongs to Allah. All praise is due to Allah; none has the right to be worshipped except Allah. He is Alone and has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise, and He is capable of all things. My Lord, I ask You for the best of what this night has and the best of what follows it. I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what follows it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and the evil of old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Hellfire and punishment in the grave. And when morning comes, say the same: ‘We have awoken and the dominion belongs to Allah.'”
- “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim in all worlds; indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Majestic.”
- “We set out on a night of heavy rain and darkness seeking the Prophet (peace be upon him) to pray for us. When we reached him, he said: ‘Say.’ I did not respond, then he said: ‘Say.’ I did not respond. Then he said: ‘Say.’ I then asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what should I say?’ He said: ‘Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and the two Mu’awidhat (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) three times when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning; they will suffice you against anything.'”
- Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq said: “O Messenger of Allah, instruct me with words to say in the morning and evening.” He said: “Say: O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, Lord of everything and its Sovereign. I bear witness that none deserves to be worshipped except You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of the devil and his partnership.” He said: “Recite this when you rise in the morning and in the evening and when you lie down.”
- “Whoever says in the morning: ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah Alone; He has no partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things competent,’ will have the reward of freeing a slave from the descendants of Ismail. Ten good deeds will be recorded for him, ten of his bad deeds will be wiped away, and ten degrees will be raised for him. He will be kept safe from the devil until evening. If he says this in the evening, he will have a similar reward until morning.”
- “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught his companions to say: When one of you awakens, let him say: ‘O Allah, by You have we awoken, and by You have we entered the evening, and by You do we live, and by You do we die, and to You is the final return.’ And when it becomes evening, let him say: ‘O Allah, by You have we entered the evening, and by You have we awakened, and by You do we live, and by You do we die, and to You is the resurrection.'”
- “There is no servant who says every morning and every evening, ‘In the name of Allah, with Whose Name nothing on earth or in the heavens can harm; and He is the Hearing, the Knowing,’ three times, without being harmed by anything.”
