Morning and Evening Remembrances
Remembrance of Allah is among the most beloved and esteemed acts in the sight of the Almighty. It reflects the character of devout believers and the morning and evening remembrances are amongst the most beautiful ways for a Muslim to greet and conclude their day. These invocations serve as a guiding light, protection from evils, safeguarding for the soul, and a pathway to abundant goodness.
Evening Remembrances
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regularly observed numerous evening remembrances, including the following:
- The Throne Verse (Ayat al-Kursi).
- Surah Al-Ikhlas and the two protection Surahs (Al-Falaq and An-Nas).
- The concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.
- (O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no deity except You. You created me, and I am Your servant. I adhere to Your covenant and promise as best as I can. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me and I confess my sins. Forgive me, for there is no one who forgives sins except You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done).
- (We have entered the evening, and sovereignty belongs to Allah, and all praise is due to Him. There is no deity except Allah, alone without partners. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He has power over all things. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this night, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil that follows it. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness and old age, and I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave).
- (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, the burden of debts, and the overpowering of men).
- (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created).
- (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in the heavens or the earth can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing).
- (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, old age, hardness of heart, heedlessness, poverty, humiliation, and lowliness. I seek refuge in You from disbelief, immorality, rebellion, hypocrisy, showing off, and self-praise).
- (O Allah, I ask for Your pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask for Your pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, cover my flaws and grant me tranquility in times of fear. O Allah, protect me from in front of me, from behind me, on my right, on my left, and above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being attacked from below).
- (O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, Lord of everything and its Sovereign. I bear witness that there is no deity but You; I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of Satan and his partnership).
- (O Allah, we have entered the evening and You are our protector, we live and die by You, and to You will be our return).
Morning Remembrances
Similarly, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also practiced several morning remembrances, which include:
- Ayat al-Kursi, where Allah says: (Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great).
- Surah Al-Ikhlas, where Allah states: (Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.’).
- Surah Al-Falaq, where Allah commands: (Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak from the evil of that which He created and from the evil of the blowers in knots and from the evil of an envier when he envies.’).
- Surah An-Nas, where Allah guides: (Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind. The God of mankind from the evil of the retreating whisperer – who whispers in the breasts of mankind – of jinn and among men.’).
- (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, the burden of debts, and the overpowering of men).
- (O Allah, with You we begin the morning, and with You we enter the evening, with You we live and with You we die, and to You is our resurrection. And when evening falls, one should say: O Allah, we have entered the evening with You, and we have risen with You, and we live by You, and we die by You, and to You is our return).
- (We have awakened upon the natural disposition of Islam, the word of sincerity, the religion of our Prophet Muhammad, and the creed of our father Ibrahim, a Muslim, and he was not of the polytheists).
- (O Allah, with You, we have risen, and with You, we enter the evening, we live by You, and we die by You, and to You is our resurrection).
