Verses of Monotheism in Surah An-Nur
Surah An-Nur contains numerous verses that highlight the oneness of Allah (Glory be to Him). The following are some notable verses:
- Allah, the Exalted, says: (Did you not see that all who are in the heavens and the earth glorify Him? And the birds, with wings spread out? Each has known its prayer and its glorification, and Allah is Knowing of what they do).
- Allah, the Exalted, states: (To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to Allah is the final return).
- Allah, the Exalted, mentions: (Did you not see that Allah drives the clouds, then brings them together and makes them into a heap, and you see the rain coming forth from within them? And He sends down from the sky mountains of ice, and strikes with it whom He wills, and turns it away from whom He wills. The flash of His lightning almost blinds the sight).
- Allah, the Exalted, says: (Allah alternates the night and the day. Indeed, in that is a lesson for those of insight).
- Allah, the Exalted, explains: (And Allah created every moving creature from water. There are some that crawl on their bellies, and some that walk on two legs, and some that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills. Indeed, Allah is competent over all things).
- Allah, the Exalted, states: (The only statement of the believers when called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, ‘We hear and we obey.’ And it is they who will be the successful).
Verses of Monotheism in the Quran
The Quran contains many verses that affirm monotheism. Some important examples include:
- Allah, the Exalted, states: (And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me).
- Allah, the Exalted, mentions: (Did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?)
- Allah, the Exalted, declares: (And We did not send before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that there is no deity except Me, so worship Me).
- Allah, the Exalted, recounts: (And when your Lord took from the sons of Adam, from their loins, their descendants and made them testify of themselves, saying, “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we have testified.” Lest you should say on the day of resurrection, “Indeed, we were of this unaware,” or lest you say, “It was our forefathers who associated others with Allah before, and we were merely descendants after them. Will You then destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?”)
- Allah, the Exalted, commands: (Say, “Indeed, I am only commanded to worship the One God. So will you not submit [to Him]?”)
Monotheism in Prophetic Traditions
There are numerous hadiths that address the concept of monotheism. Noteworthy examples include:
- The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: (Islam is built upon five pillars: the testimony that there is no deity except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; establishing prayer; giving zakat; performing Hajj; and fasting in Ramadan).
- In a long hadith, when Gabriel asked the Prophet about faith, Islam, and excellence, he replied: (What is faith? He said, “Faith is to believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Meeting, and His Messengers, and to believe in the resurrection.”) (He asked, “What is Islam?” He said, “Islam is to worship Allah without associating anything with Him, to establish prayer, to give the obligatory zakat, and to fast Ramadan. Then he asked, “What is excellence?” He replied, “To worship Allah as if you see Him; and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.”).
- The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) also stated: (I command you to uphold four things and prohibit you from four: worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish prayer, give zakat, fast in Ramadan, and give one-fifth of the spoils).
