Honey Tea
Multiple studies indicate that honey is beneficial for treating coughs. It has been found to be more effective than the cough syrup dextromethorphan in alleviating nighttime coughs in children. To utilize honey, simply mix two teaspoons into warm water or any herbal tea and consume it twice daily. However, it is crucial to note that honey should not be given to children under one year of age.
Peppermint
Peppermint contains a compound known as menthol, which soothes the throat, alleviates congestion, and aids in the expulsion of mucus. Peppermint can be used to relieve coughs by drinking it as tea or inhaling its beneficial vapors. To do this, add 3-4 drops of peppermint oil to 150 milliliters of hot water, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam rising from the water.
Saltwater
Saltwater helps draw moisture away from the inflamed throat through osmosis, thereby reducing swelling. This technique can be employed by mixing a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and gargling with it three times a day.
Ginger
Ginger may alleviate coughing associated with asthma due to its anti-inflammatory properties, which help relax membranes in the respiratory tract. To prepare ginger tea, add 20-40 grams of fresh, chopped ginger root to a cup of hot water and let it steep for several minutes. Adding lemon and honey can enhance the flavor and boost its effectiveness in soothing coughs.
Steam Inhalation
Inhaling steam can reduce mucus and relieve coughing. To use this method, boil some water and inhale the rising steam while covering your head with a towel.
Thyme
Thyme can be effective in treating various respiratory ailments due to its flavonoid compounds, which relax the throat muscles responsible for coughing and reduce inflammation. To use thyme, place two teaspoons of its dried leaves in a cup of boiling water, cover the cup to steep for 10 minutes, then strain and consume.
