Etiquette of the Mosque for Children

Etiquette of the Mosque

Mosques are the houses of Allah (Exalted and Glorious), which is why it is essential for Muslims to observe certain etiquettes when attending prayers. This respect honors the sacredness of the space. Below are some important etiquettes to follow:

Approach the Mosque in Your Finest Attire

Muslims should approach the mosques in their best attire. This attractive appearance includes being in a state of purity, which is a prerequisite for a valid prayer. Therefore, one must enter the mosque clean and free from any filth or impurities. This cleanliness should also extend to one’s clothing.

It is advisable for Muslims to wear their finest clothes when meeting Allah (Glory be to Him). As part of proper manners, one should avoid attending prayers in dirty work clothes or sleepwear. As Allah says in the Quran: “O Children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid.”

The Use of Siwak

One of the recommended practices for Muslims when heading to the mosque is using siwak (a traditional teeth-cleaning stick). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “If I did not fear that it would be burdensome for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use siwak before every prayer.” Using siwak ensures the cleanliness of one’s mouth and teeth, preventing any unpleasant odors that could disturb fellow worshippers, while also earning rewards and pleasing Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: “Siwak is a purifier for the mouth and pleasing to the Lord.”

Walk to the Mosque with Dignity and Humility

It is encouraged for Muslims to walk calmly and humbly to the mosque, avoiding haste in order to reach the prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised: “When you hear the iqamah, proceed to the prayer with serenity and dignity; do not rush. Whatever you catch, pray, and whatever you miss, complete.”

Allah (Exalted and Glorious) has promised great rewards for those who walk towards the mosque, even from a distance. As mentioned in a narration: “Our homes were far from the mosque, and we intended to sell our houses to move closer. But the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade us and said: ‘For every step you take, you earn a degree.’”

Additionally, arriving early at the mosque is commendable, as it brings significant rewards. The Prophet (peace be upon him) remarked: “If people knew the value of the adhan and the first row, and if they could not obtain it but by drawing lots, they would draw lots for it. If they knew the merits of arriving early, they would race to do so.”

Dua Upon Entering the Mosque

When entering the mosque, it is essential for Muslims to enter with the right foot and recite the recommended supplications, which include:

  • I seek refuge with Allah, the Almighty, and with His Noble Face, and His Eternal Authority, from the accursed devil.
  • In the name of Allah, O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad.
  • O Allah, open for me the doors of Your Mercy; and upon exiting, one should say: O Allah, I ask You for Your Favor.

Offering the Two Rakat of Greeting the Mosque

Upon entering the mosque, it is highly recommended for Muslims to pray the two rakats known as the “Greeting of the Mosque.” One should not simply sit down or begin conversing with others immediately. The Greeting of the Mosque is akin to the salutation when entering a home. The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded this practice, stating: “When one of you enters the mosque, he should not sit until he prays two rakats.”
