Who are Scholars?
Scholars are considered the heirs of the prophets; they are dedicated individuals who possess knowledge of Allah’s commandments and advocate for adherence to His directives along with the teachings of His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah states in the Qur’an: {Indeed, it is those who have knowledge among His servants who fear Allah.} Furthermore, there is a narration attributed to Abu Umamah Al-Bahili that highlights the esteemed status of scholars: “Two men were mentioned in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); one was a worshiper and the other a scholar. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) remarked: The superiority of the scholar over the worshiper is like my superiority over the least of you. He then said: Indeed, Allah, His angels, and the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, even the ant in its hole and the whale, send blessings upon the teacher of the good among the people.”
What are the Etiquettes for Dealing with Scholars?
Interacting with scholars comes with specific etiquettes that aspiring students of knowledge should observe and embody. Here are some key points to consider:
Firstly: Loving and Respecting Them
This involves showing them esteem by addressing them with the best titles, maintaining a calm demeanor in their presence, and praying for their well-being. Allah has praised their stature in His Book, stating: {Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for piety; for them is forgiveness and a great reward}.
Secondly: Avoiding Offenses Towards Them
It is crucial to exercise patience in dealing with the shortcomings of scholars and to seek excuses for their mistakes, especially when they do not contradict divine law. Students should refrain from displaying boredom or annoyance in their presence, as this is most beneficial for their religious and worldly pursuits.
Thirdly: Trusting and Supporting Them
A student of knowledge should adhere to their teacher’s views and avoid questioning their expertise. Instead, they should strive to serve them and comply with their guidance, showing gratitude for the knowledge imparted and assisting in disseminating that knowledge to others.
Fourthly: Seeking Permission When Entering or Exiting a Gathering
It is respectful for a student to seek permission from their teacher before entering a gathering three times without repeating the request, whether the teacher is alone or accompanied. They should avoid knocking loudly on the door and greet the teacher and others present if granted entry, sitting respectfully without crossing their legs and refraining from unnecessary movements.
Fifthly: Speaking Courteously with Them
A student should strive for decorum when conversing with their teacher, being ready to apologize sincerely if they inadvertently show disrespect. When speaking, they should approach the conversation with kindness and avoid interrupting their teacher. Questions should be posed respectfully, without arguing or rejecting their views, and students should not precede scholars in explaining issues or presenting arguments.
Sixthly: Treating Them with Kindness
A student of knowledge should maintain good conduct and strong interpersonal skills, especially with scholars. When accompanying their teacher, they should walk ahead during the day and stay behind at night for their safety. When passing something to their teacher, it should be done with the right hand, and care should be taken to be gentle and considerate in their behavior.
