The Planting of Paradise
The term “Planting of Paradise” is referenced in a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “Shall I not guide you to a planting that is better than this? You say: SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest). For every one of these words, a tree will be planted for you in Paradise.” Linguistically, a “planting” refers to all that is planted, whether it be palm trees or other foliage; thus, the “Planting of Paradise” mentioned in this noble hadith comprises the phrases: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, and Allahu Akbar. These four terms represent easy and accessible forms of worship that a Muslim can recite at any time. They are significant and exalted remembrances for those whom Allah has granted ease and facilitation, and through their recitation, a Muslim can attain countless trees in Paradise.
Meanings of These Phrases
The phrase “SubhanAllah” signifies that Allah is exalted and free from any deficiency, imperfection, falsehood, or erroneous assumption. It is derived from the root word “sabb,” which means distance. “Alhamdulillah” refers to the act of praising Allah for His beautiful names and perfect attributes; a Muslim should express gratitude to Allah in all circumstances, whether in times of ease or hardship. “Allahu Akbar” indicates that Allah is the most magnificent, supreme, and transcendent entity, greater than anything in this universe and beyond any conceivable thought. Lastly, “La ilaha illallah” affirms that only Allah is worthy of worship, negating the validity of devotion towards any other being and confirming it solely for Him.
The Merit of the Planting of Paradise
These four phrases are among the most beloved expressions to Allah, as they encompass His glorification and exaltation. They are also cherished by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) more than anything under the sun, including worldly possessions and adornments. They serve as expiators of sins and represent the planting of Paradise. Allah has chosen and designated these words for His servants, bestowing upon those who recite them a tremendous reward, while also serving as a protection from the fire of Hell. The Prophet (peace be upon him) has informed us that these words hold significant weight on the Day of Judgment.
