Prayers Before Sleep
It is highly encouraged for a Muslim to turn to Allah Almighty in prayer before going to sleep. Among the well-known prayers are the following:
- (O Allah, You created my soul, and You are the one who takes it. To You belongs its death and its life. If You give it life, protect it; and if You cause it to die, forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for wellness).
- (In Your name, O Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it. If You hold my soul, have mercy on it; and if You release it, protect it like You protect Your righteous servants).
- (O Allah, shield me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants).
- (In Your name, O Allah, I die and live).
- (O Allah, I have surrendered my face to You, entrusted my affairs to You, and sought refuge in You with hope and fear. There is no refuge or escape from You except to You. O Allah, I believe in Your Book that You revealed and in Your Prophet whom You sent. If I die this night, I die on the fitrah).
- (O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no deity but You. You created me, and I am Your servant. I am on Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me and confess my sins. Forgive me, for none forgives sins except You. It was said: Whoever says this in the daytime, with certainty in it, and dies before evening, is among the inhabitants of Paradise. And whoever says it at night, with certainty in it, and dies before morning, is among the inhabitants of Paradise).
- (O Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth and Lord of the mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, Maker of the grain and the seeds, and the one who sent down the Torah, the Gospel, and the Criterion. I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything You hold by the forelock. O Allah, You are the First; there is nothing before You. You are the Last; there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest; there is nothing above You. You are the Hidden; there is nothing below You. Clear us from debt and enrich us from poverty).
Evening Remembrances
A Muslim earns numerous rewards for remembering Allah Almighty, as it serves as a shield, keeping them away from falsehood and hypocrisy. It also brings tranquility and mercy upon them, and Allah acknowledges their remembrance and boasts of them. Among the remembrances to be recited in the evening that are mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah are:
- (No servant says every morning and evening: ‘In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing can harm in the heavens or the earth. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing,’ three times, without being harmed).
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: (If you say when the evening comes: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created, nothing will harm you).
- (Whoever says in the morning and in the evening: ‘Glory be to Allah and praise Him’ one hundred times, no one will come on the Day of Resurrection with better deeds than what they have brought, except someone who has said the same or more).
- It was narrated by Abdullah bin Khabab that he said: (We went out on a rainy and dark night seeking the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to pray for us. When we reached him, he asked: Have you prayed? I said nothing. He said: Say, and I still did not say anything. He then said: Say, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, what shall I say? He replied: {Say: He is Allah, One} and the two protectors when you enter the evening and the morning, three times, will suffice you from everything).
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (The master of repentance is to say: O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no deity but You. You created me, and I am Your servant. I am on Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me and confess my sins. Forgive me, for no one forgives sins except You. It was said: Whoever says this in the daytime, with certainty, and dies before evening, is among the inhabitants of Paradise. And whoever says it at night, with certainty, and dies before morning, is among the inhabitants of Paradise).
- Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would say when evening came: We have entered into evening and the kingdom belongs to Allah; all praise is for Allah; there is no deity but Allah, alone with no partner. He would say: He has the kingdom and the praise, and He is over all things capable. O Lord, I ask You for the best of what this night holds and the best that comes after it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what this night holds and the evil that comes after it. O Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and the evil of old age. O Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave. And when morning came, he would say the same: We have entered into morning and the kingdom belongs to Allah).
- (The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught his companions to say: When one of you awakens, let him say: O Allah, by You we have awoken, by You we have entered the evening, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the return. And when evening comes, let him say: O Allah, by You we have entered the evening, by You we have awoken, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the resurrection).
- Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (O Messenger of Allah, instruct me with words that I can say when I wake and when I sleep. He said: Say: O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, Lord of everything and its King, I bear witness that there is no deity but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and the evil of the devil and his partnership. Say it when you wake and when you sleep).
- Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never missed these supplications when he would enter the evening and morning: O Allah, I ask You for wellness in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and wellness in my faith, my world, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults – and Uthman said: my faults – and secure my fears. O Allah, protect me from my front, from my back, from my right, from my left, and above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being killed from beneath me).
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (Whoever says when he wakes: There is no deity but Allah, alone with no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom and to Him belongs the praise, and He is over all things capable; he will have the equivalent of freeing a slave from the descendants of Ismail, ten good deeds will be recorded for him, ten sins will be removed from him, ten ranks will be raised for him, and he will be in a refuge from the devil until evening. If he says it at night, he will have the same until morning).
Remembrances Before Sleep from the Quran
The Islamic law prescribes the recitation of verses and chapters from the Quran before going to bed, including:
- The Throne Verse (Ayat al-Kursi): It protects the sleeper from the devil until they awaken.
- The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah: Sufficient against harm and the devil, and for night prayers.
- Reciting the two protectors (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) and Surah Al-Ikhlas: After reciting, one blows into their palms and wipes their body as much as possible, starting from the face and head, repeating this three times.
- Surah Al-Kafirun: Its conclusion grants salvation from polytheism.
