May God grant you comfort in your loss.

Condolences and Reflections

In this piece, we reflect on the sentiments surrounding condolences:

  1. We extend our heartfelt condolences and pray that your grief is eased, that your loss is compensated, and that your deceased loved one is forgiven and granted peace. These phrases are familiar to many of us as we offer condolences to the bereaved. However, a question arises: When should we express these words to our loved ones? When can we expect others to visit our homes to offer their condolences on our behalf? Will they come after twenty years, one year, or perhaps today?
  2. Only God knows when such moments will occur. Dear brother in faith, are you prepared for death? It is essential to reflect on the realities of mortality and the hopes and fears that follow. Have you consoled your own soul before others console your family upon your passing? This is a crucial question. Have you envisioned people gathering in your home for your farewell? What would the state of your mother, father, spouse, and children be if present?
  3. Can you visualize yourself being handled by the one preparing you for burial, gently turning you from side to side? Have you contemplated the moment when you are laid in the grave, the soil is placed upon you, and you hear the footsteps of others as they return to their lives after your burial?
  4. My dear brother, the true loneliness arises in the grave where the body lies shrouded. Have you remembered the moments of your final sickness, when your loved ones are beside you? As the moments grow heavier and death grips you tight, your soul departs from this world, and your family prepares to pray for you, laying you alone in the grave, with no mother to comfort you, no father to accompany you, and no sibling to support you.
  5. May God grant you strength, bless you with patience, forgive your loved ones, and admit them to the gardens of paradise. O Allah, illuminate their grave with light. Have mercy on them, grant them eternal peace, and inspire their family with patience and solace. All power and strength are with Allah alone.
  6. O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them, pardon their sins, honor their descent, widen their entrance, cleanse them with water, snow, and cold, and purify them from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Show them mercy and us when we return to our final resting place. Reward them with good deeds and pardon their shortcomings. Open the doors of heaven for their soul through Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful. O Allah, grant them ease in their reckoning, and may their grave be a garden from the gardens of paradise, not a pit from the pits of fire. Grant their beloved ones patience and consolation.
  7. O Allah, if they were righteous, increase their good deeds. If they committed sins, overlook their transgressions. Exchange their earthly abode with something better and a family superior to theirs. Expand their grave as far as their vision can see, making it a garden from the gardens of paradise, not a pit from the pits of fire. Provide solace to their loved ones.
  8. O Allah, grant them the fruit of paradise and all that is good and pure. Lift the veil from their sight and make them among those You mentioned in Your holy words. O Allah, You who knows all faces and voices, who holds the destiny of everything and grants sustenance to all, extend Your grace upon them, O Eternal Bestower of kindness. O Acknowledged Benefactor, You who hears the smallest sound in the darkness of night, You who does not forget those who forget You, be merciful to us.
