Children of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was blessed with three sons:
- Qasim
Qasim was the eldest son of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and was born to Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her). His birth occurred prior to the commencement of the prophetic mission, and he passed away in infancy, before reaching the age where he could walk or ride.
- Abdullah
Abdullah, the second son of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with his wife Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), was noted by Ibn Qayyim to have been born after all of his sisters. He is considered the youngest son, with some debate regarding whether his birth took place before or after the prophetic mission. He also died young and was given the nicknames Al-Tahir and Al-Tayyib.
- Ibrahim
Ibrahim was the son of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Maria al-Qibtiyya (may Allah be pleased with her). He was born in Medina during the eighth year after the Hijra and unfortunately passed away in infancy before completing his nursing period.
Daughters of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had four daughters, namely:
- Zainab
Zainab was the eldest daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). She was born before the prophetic mission and married Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi in Mecca, also before the mission began. After the advent of Islam, Zainab embraced the new faith while her husband initially resisted. She migrated to Medina while he remained in Mecca, but he converted to Islam one year prior to the conquest of Mecca, and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reunited them. Zainab passed away in Medina in the eighth year after Hijra.
- Ruqayyah
Ruqayyah was the second daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). She was born during the pre-Islamic era and was initially married to Uthbah ibn Abu Lahab, but their union was short-lived as Abu Lahab forced Uthbah to divorce her after the prophetic mission began. Later, Ruqayyah married Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) and accompanied him on both Hijras to Abyssinia. She earned the title “the Possessor of Two Hijras” before migrating to Medina. Sadly, she fell ill just before the Battle of Badr and passed away while the Muslims were engaged in the battle.
- Um Kulthum
Um Kulthum, another daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Khadijah, was older than her sister Fatimah. She married Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) in the third year after Hijra, following the death of her sister Ruqayyah. Um Kulthum passed away in the ninth year after Hijra.
- Fatimah
Fatimah was the youngest daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Khadijah. She was born five years prior to the prophetic mission and married Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) after the Battle of Uhud when she was eighteen years old. Together, they had several children, including Hasan, Husain, Zainab, and Um Kulthum. Fatimah passed away six months after the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), making her the only child to die after his passing.
Mothers of the Prophet’s Children
Khadijah bint Khuwaylid
Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her) was a prominent figure in Quraysh. She was born 68 years before the commencement of the prophetic mission and married the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when he was 25 years old, while she was 40, being 15 years his senior.
As a successful merchant in her own right, Khadijah entrusted the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with her trade ventures, which led to their marriage, driven by her knowledge of his honesty and integrity. She bore all of his children except for Ibrahim, and she passed away three years prior to the Hijra.
Maria al-Qibtiyya
Maria al-Qibtiyya was the mother of Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). She was gifted to the Prophet by the Coptic ruler, and he took her as a concubine. Upon giving birth to Ibrahim, she was freed from servitude, as her child liberated her. Maria passed away during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who prayed for her.
