Setif is located along the coastal region of Algeria, specifically in the eastern part. It spans an area of 2,398 square kilometers, with the capital city being Setif. The northern boundary faces the sea, while to the south, it is bordered by Mila and Sétif. To the east, it overlooks Skikda, and to the west, it shares a boundary with Bejaia. According to the most recent statistics published in 2008, the population of Setif is approximately 602,407 inhabitants.
History of Setif
The history of this province can be traced back to the Berber tribe of Kutama. The Amazigh lineage, as noted by Ibn Khaldun, indicates that the province was established in ancient times by the Phoenicians. Due to its strategic location, Setif attracted various invaders over the centuries, including the Romans, Byzantines, Vandals, and others.
Setif eventually came under Ottoman control after its inhabitants allied themselves with the brothers Barbarossa, who expelled southern tribes and established a powerful naval fleet that played a crucial role in liberating Algeria. However, this fleet faltered in 1827 when France occupied the region, leading to numerous unsuccessful uprisings for liberation. This tumultuous period claimed the lives of many martyrs, including Dakhli Mokhtar and Kaoula Tunisia. Following the end of French colonization in Setif, the province was divided into eleven districts and twenty-eight municipalities.
