Verses from the Holy Quran to Aid Sleep
The Holy Quran contains numerous verses that emphasize tranquility, comfort, and sleep. These verses can be beneficial for those seeking restful slumber, including the following:
- Allah, the Exalted, states: “And He it is who made the night a garment for you and sleep a rest, and made the day a resurrection.”
- Allah, the Exalted, says: “When slumber overcomes you, it is a security from Him. And He sends down upon you from the heaven water to purify you and to remove from you the evil of Satan and to strengthen your hearts and make firm your feet.”
- Allah, the Exalted, mentions: “It is Allah who made the night for you to find repose in and the day for you to see. Indeed, Allah is full of grace upon the people, but most of the people do not show gratitude.”
- Allah, the Exalted, asserts: “He it is who made the night for you to dwell in and the day for sight. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who listen.”
- Allah, the Exalted, reminds us: “And it is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have earned by day. Then He resurrects you therein that a term specified be fulfilled. Then to Him will be your return; then He will inform you of what you used to do.”
- Allah, the Exalted, states: “And among His signs is your sleep by night and day and your seeking of His bounty. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who listen.”
- Allah, the Exalted, declares: “And We made your sleep a source of rest and made the night a garment, and We made the day a means of livelihood.”
Quranic Verses to Recite Before Sleep
The beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) guided us to recite certain verses before sleep. Here are some of those verses:
- Allah, the Exalted, states: “Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
- Allah, the Exalted, says: “The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His Books and His messengers, [saying], ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they say, ‘We hear and we obey. [Grant us] Your forgiveness, our Lord. To You is the final destination. Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or made a mistake. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.”
- Allah, the Exalted, says: “Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'”
- Allah, the Exalted, instructs: “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak from the evil of that which He created and from the evil of darkness when it settles and from the evil of the blowers in knots and from the evil of an envier when he envies.'”
- Allah, the Exalted, advises: “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer – who whispers in the breasts of mankind, of jinn and of mankind.'”
Supplications to Assist with Sleep
There are specific supplications and remembrances that the beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recommended reciting before going to bed. Some of these include:
- “In Your name, my Lord, I lay my side down and with You, I raise it. If You take my soul, then have mercy upon it; and if You send it back, then protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.”
- “O Allah, I surrender my soul to You, I entrust my affairs to You, I direct my face to You, and I lean my back upon You, seeking desire and fear of You. There is no refuge nor escape from You except in You. I believe in Your Book that You have revealed and in Your Messenger whom You have sent.”
- “In the name of Allah, I lay my side down. O Allah, forgive my sins, silence my devil, free my shackles, and grant me a position among the highest company.”
- “O Allah, You created my soul, and to You belongs its life and death. O Allah, if You take it, forgive it, and if You bring it back to life, protect it. O Allah, I ask You for wellness.”
