The Effects of Divine Mercy in the Universe
When contemplating the vastness of the universe, one can easily observe the effect of Divine Mercy towards humanity through the provision of the cosmos for their service. Among the manifestations of Divine Mercy -may He be exalted- within the universe are the following:
- The Earth: Divine Mercy is evident in the Earth, which has been made suitable and accessible for human habitation. It is a place where sustenance and resources are plentiful, allowing individuals to pursue their basic needs. Additionally, God -the Almighty- has carved out seas and facilitated navigation within them under His protection, providing a treasure trove of pearls, corals, and other resources for human benefit.
- The Sky: The sky serves as another sign of Divine Mercy towards humanity, functioning as a safeguarded canopy above. Within it, the sun and moon are placed as sources of light for the inhabitants of Earth, creating a rhythm of night and day by His command.
- The Winds: Winds represent a third aspect of divine benevolence, as they transport pollen from one plant to another, facilitating cross-fertilization before rain showers from above nourish the earth, allowing it to yield its bounty.
Effects of Divine Mercy in the Stewardship of the Earth
Among the manifestations of Divine Mercy -exalted be He- is the creation of humanity and the designation of humans as stewards on Earth. God has honored mankind, marking one of the most remarkable signs of Divine Mercy in the universe. Below are a few examples of Divine Mercy towards humanity:
- The sending of prophets, the revelation of scriptures, the clarification of laws, and the arrival of those who bring good tidings and warnings to the people.
- The institution of marriage is a Divine mercy that sustains connection, procreation, and community, fostering mutual benefits for both genders through this union.
- Children: It is an act of Divine Mercy that couples are granted children after marriage, designating them as a source of joy and enjoyment in worldly life.
- The interdependence among individuals ensures the continuity of life and community.
- Protection for the righteous against the deceit and traps of evil.
- Divine safeguarding of the pious among humanity.
Mercy as a Divine Attribute
Mercy is one of the attributes of God, embodying compassion and tenderness. This quality of mercy is ascribed to God -the Almighty- in relation to His creations, as He has described Himself in the Holy Qur’an. The Prophet Muhammad -peace and blessings be upon him- urged human beings to embody this trait among one another. He stated, “Indeed, God has one hundred parts of mercy, of which He has sent down one portion among jinn, humans, animals, and bugs, with which they engage in compassion towards one another. He has withheld ninety-nine parts to bestow upon His servants on the Day of Judgment.” Mercy is an attribute of God that it is commendable for His servants to also embody, signifying a shared characteristic between the Creator -exalted be He- and His creation.
