Authentic Narrations from Sahih Bukhari and Muslim

Hadiths from Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on Prayer

In both Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, there are numerous hadiths from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) concerning prayer. Here are a few notable mentions:

  • Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “I used to sleep in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with my legs extended toward the Qiblah. When he prostrated, he would gently nudge me, and I would retract my legs; when he rose, I would stretch them out again. She noted: ‘At that time, the houses did not have lamps.’
  • Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was asked: “What prayer is the best after the obligatory prayers? And what fasting is the best after Ramadan?” He replied: “The best prayer after the obligatory ones is prayer during the last part of the night, and the best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah Al-Muharram.”
  • The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated: “The five prayers, and from one Jumu’ah (Friday prayer) to the next Jumu’ah, and Ramadan to Ramadan are expiations for the sins that occur between them, provided one avoids the major sins.”
  • Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “Imagine if a river flows by the door of one of you, and he bathes in it five times a day! What do you think? Would any dirt remain on him?” They responded: “No dirt would remain!” He said: “That is similar to the five daily prayers, through which Allah wipes away sins.”

Hadiths from Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on Fasting

There are several hadiths reported by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about fasting in both Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Here are some examples:

  • Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: ‘When you see it (the moon), then fast; and when you see it, break your fast. If it is obscured from you, then estimate it.'”
  • Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward will have his previous sins forgiven. And whoever prays during the Night of Decree out of faith and in the hope of reward will have his previous sins forgiven.”
  • The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Every deed of Adam’s son is multiplied; a good deed is rewarded tenfold up to seven hundred times. Allah, the Exalted, said: ‘Except for fasting. It is for Me, and I will reward it. The believer abandons his desires and food for My sake. There are two celebrations for the fasting person: one when he breaks his fast and another when he meets his Lord. The smell from the mouth of a fasting person is more pleasing to Allah than the scent of musk.’
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned: “In Paradise, there are eight gates, one of which is called Al-Rayyan, and only those who fast will enter through it.”
  • He also stated: “No servant fasts a day in the cause of Allah except that Allah distances his face from the fire by seventy autumns because of that day.”

Hadiths from Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on Good Character

Numerous hadiths illustrate the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) concerning good character in both Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Here are a few examples:

  • Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was not coarse in speech nor harsh. He said: ‘The best of you are those who have the best character.’
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm their neighbor. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor their guest. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”
  • He remarked: “Verily, among the best of you are those who have the best character.”
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A person continues to be truthful until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person. And falsehood leads to sinfulness, and sinfulness leads to the Fire; a person continues to lie until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.”
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) would often pray: “Guide me to the best of character, for none guides to the best of it except You. Turn me away from the bad character; none can turn me away from it except You. Here I am ready at Your service, and all goodness is in Your hand, and evil is not attributed to You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.”
  • Nawas ibn Sam’an al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about righteousness and sinfulness. He replied: ‘Righteousness is good character, and sin is that which unsettles your heart and you would dislike the world to see it.’

Hadiths from Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on the Bounties of Paradise

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) conveyed several hadiths regarding the bounties of Paradise in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Here are some highlights:

  • The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and His Messenger, establishes prayer, and fasts during Ramadan, it is a right upon Allah to admit him into Paradise, whether he fights in the cause of Allah or remains in the land where he was born.” The companions inquired: “O Messenger of Allah, should we not announce to the people?” He replied: “In Paradise, there are one hundred ranks that Allah has prepared for the fighters (mujahideen) in His cause, and between each two ranks is as far apart as the heavens and the earth. If you ask Allah, then ask Him for Al-Firdaus, for it is the middle and highest part of Paradise, and above it is the Throne of the Most Merciful. From it, the rivers of Paradise burst forth.”
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned: “The space of one of you’s bow or his foot in Paradise is better than all that exists in this world. And if a woman from the inhabitants of Paradise were to glimpse at the Earth, she would illuminate all that is between them and fill it with fragrance. The strap of her sandal is better than all the treasures of this world.”
  • He also said: “In Paradise, there will be a market where they will come every Friday. A northerly wind will blow, scattering fragrance in their faces and clothes, increasing their beauty and charm. They will return to their families, looking even more beautiful, and their families will remark: ‘By Allah, you have become more beautiful since we last saw you!’ They will reply: ‘And you, by Allah, you have also become more beautiful since we last saw you!'”

Hadiths from Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on Repentance

Several hadiths emphasize the concept of repentance as conveyed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Here are some examples:

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “O people! Repent to Allah, for I repent to Him one hundred times a day.”
  • He stated: “By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him more than seventy times a day.”
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) declared: “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, if you did not sin, Allah would sweep you out of existence and would bring forth new people who would commit sin and ask Allah for forgiveness, and He would forgive them.”
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned: “Indeed, Allah – the Mighty and Majestic – extends His hand during the night so that the one who has sinned during the day can repent, and He extends His hand during the day so that the one who has sinned at night can repent, until the sun rises from its west.”
