Verses on Envy, the Evil Eye, and Magic in the Quran

Verses on Envy and the Evil Eye in the Holy Quran

The Holy Quran contains several verses that discuss the concepts of envy and the evil eye. Below are some notable examples:

  • Allah, the Exalted, says: “Or do they envy the people for what Allah has given them of His bounty? But We had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom, and We gave them a great kingdom.”
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: “And do not wish for that by which Allah has preferred some of you over others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah of His bounty. Indeed, Allah is Ever Knowing of all things.”
  • Allah, the Exalted, mentions: “Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after your belief, out of envy from themselves.”
  • Allah, the Exalted, says: “Indeed, those who disbelieve almost cause you to stumble with their eyes when they hear the Reminder.”

Verses on Magic in the Holy Quran

There are numerous verses in the Quran that address the topic of magic. Below are some significant verses:

  • Allah, the Exalted, states: “And they followed what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. And Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. And they would not teach anyone unless they said, ‘We are a trial.’”

“So do not disbelieve, and they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. And they do not harm anyone thereby except by permission of Allah. And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them. And they certainly knew that whoever buys into it has no share in the Hereafter. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves if they only knew.”

  • Allah, the Exalted, says: “And Pharaoh said, ‘Bring to me every skilled magician.’ And when the magicians came, Moses said to them, ‘Throw down what you will throw.’ And when they had thrown, Moses said, ‘What you have brought is sorcery; indeed, Allah will invalidate it. Indeed, Allah does not establish the work of the corruptors.’ And Allah will establish the truth by His words, even if the criminals dislike it.”
  • Allah, the Exalted, states: “Is it a wonder for the people that We have inspired a man from among them, ‘Warn the people and give good tidings to those who believe that they will have a position of truth with their Lord’? The disbelievers said, ‘Indeed, this is a manifest sorcerer.’”
  • Allah, the Exalted, says: “We know what they listen to when they listen to you, and when they are in private counsel, when the wrongdoers say, ‘You follow not but a man possessed.’”

Prophetic Narrations Regarding Envy and the Evil Eye

Several prophetic sayings address the topics of envy and the evil eye, warning against their negative impact. Here are some notable examples:

  • The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The evil eye is real.”
  • He also said: “Beware of envy, for envy devours good deeds just as fire devours wood.”
  • Additionally, he remarked: “There has crept into you the disease of previous nations: envy and hatred. It is the razor; I do not say that it shaves hair but it shaves religion. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe; and you will not believe until you love one another. Should I not inform you of something that, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread peace among yourselves.”
  • A companion asked the Prophet (peace be upon him), “O Messenger of Allah, my sons, the children of Ja’far, are afflicted by the evil eye; should I seek a remedy for them?” The Prophet replied: “Yes, if there were anything that could precede destiny, it would be the evil eye.”
