Ode of Ramadan’s Passage
- The poet Ibn Al-Janan reflects on Ramadan’s fleeting nature:
Ramadan has passed, or perhaps it has just departed,
its light dimmed after once shining bright.
O what a time it was, full of honor,
and how hard it is for me to witness its end.
It visited us like a fleeting shadow in summer,
staying briefly before taking its leave.
Oh, how I wish to know as it departs,
has it left us with anger or contentment?
The truth has been met with virtue’s strength,
yet who among us has truly fulfilled their rights?
How many hands have generously helped the pious,
with their repentance rendering their records pure?
And how many virtues glowed brightly,
erased by kindness and goodness in return?
Indeed, this blessed month offered its bounties,
revealed only to those who were receptive.
So linger at the farewell pathways, for they,
will cleanse the yearning soul and lighten burdens.
O how beautiful is that night of supreme worth,
which the Hashemites honored and urged us to seek.
Perhaps the remaining days of this honorable month,
will unveil secrets for those who have remained vigilant.
It had the purest essence, ready to flow,
but disputes arose, leading to chaos.
Indeed, they urged, “Seek it to find joy in its pursuit,”
awakening those with hearts to rise and strive.
Ode to the Midpoint of Ramadan
- In his poem, Abu Nawas reflects on the midpoint of Ramadan:
When half of Ramadan has slipped away,
the festive atmosphere beckons us to play.
The flute has been tuned, and the drum now beats,
while the pages turn among the merry souls.
On a promised day where there is no deceit,
until they gather, side by side, in unity.
Some embrace the earth, while others form a shelter.
Ode to the Arrival of the Month of God
- In his verse, Aboud Al-Tarihi calls to the advent of the month of God:
Here comes the month of God, prepare and get ready,
to fast with piety and righteousness.
A month when mercy descends abundantly,
and all that is good shines forth for the righteous.
For the sake of God, let your recitation be,
of the Quran in the morning light.
Abstain from distractions and call upon Him,
throughout the day and during the night’s unveiling.
All sins you have borne will be removed,
during Ramadan these burdens will ease.
As the month approaches, arise, celebrate,
the first night is a time of blessing.
Just as the verses declare, my friend,
the company of women was permitted.
It was made lawful for us in the night,
but forbidden at the break of dawn.
The Best Farewell to Our Ramadan
- The poet Al-Ghashiri expresses the best farewell to Ramadan:
The best farewell to our Ramadan,
is there solace to be found after parting?
The best farewell to you, O month of guidance,
with no sin or disobedience left behind.
Upon your departure, tears welled in our eyes,
flowing abundantly like a torrential rain.
For you are indeed exceptional, revered in your status,
the noblest of months and the leader of times.
In you, every good deed is multiplied,
and blessings for humanity are manifold.
And for the Night of Decree, which holds great worth,
the Divine proportion holds a boundless significance.
The Spirit descends; angels come in host,
by the permission of the Singular and Bountiful.
For worshipping, strive hard during these hours,
and proclaim, “O Lord, grant me kindness!”
Accept from me what I have fasted before,
and bless, O You who reigns on high, with forgiveness.
Happy are those who fast and stand in prayer,
having completed this month with patience and faith.
The fasting and prayerful will gather,
at the Day of Reckoning, in the gardens of delight.
Rejoice as they are ushered to their blissful abode,
with radiant faces at the entrance of al-Rayyan.
We see their foreheads shining bright,
beneath the crowns they wear upon their heads.
A month safeguarded by God, soon to return,
the Merciful will bring it back for the living once more.
The Divine Whispers in Ramadan
- The poet Omar Al-Rafai celebrates the divine whispers during Ramadan:
The divine whispers in Ramadan,
have revived my spirit with their ethereal essence.
The heavenly breezes have blown over the early riser,
with blessings from the Divine’s presence.
Holy inspirations, how often they have graced,
those who are immersed in heartfelt longing.
I have not tasted anything like them—how could one like me,
describe the beauty of their significance?
How I long to express the essence of this taste,
which has blossomed within my heart.
Words fail to encapsulate the depth of meaning,
despite lengthy attempts to convey those meanings.
Yet, even if the description takes a while to unfold,
it heralded a bounteous opening—the benevolent one.
These divine gifts have not eluded me during Ramadan,
as a testament to His immense generosity.
Indeed, I have not missed the cherished desires gifted by my Beloved,
for He is the essence of all I yearn for and my stronghold of safety.
He is the secret within my soul, guarded and protected,
a mercy for all the worlds, transcending all realms.
He is both a light and foundation in existence,
revealing hardships, the awaited intercessor.
The trustworthiness of the steadfast refuge,
the steadfast supporter of the Faithful one,
He, the Most High, revered in status.
O Spirit of Muhammad, the cherished one of my soul,
I would sacrifice both soul and body for you.
This is the Crescent of Fasting from Ramadan
- The poet Ibn Al-Sabbagh Al-Judhami presents this ode:
This is the crescent moon of Ramadan,
appearing in the horizon—do not be slow to perceive!
It arrives as a guest, so honor its arrival,
and let its reading be the recitation of the Quran.
Fast and preserve it, cherish its days,
and support the weak through acts of kindness.
Wash away sins with tears streaming,
as their essence cleanses the burdens of the past.
It is no surprise that tears cleanse what has been wrought,
with cheeks drenched in the sorrow of the wrongdoer.
O Allah, awaken those who are steadfast;
save them from the calamity of loss and despair.
They have turned away from their beds and risen through the night,
humbly beseeching You in submission.
They stand firmly in fidelity, ready to serve,
dedicating their lives to the Master of the Day of Judgment.
They mount their determination, wrapped in resilience,
as longings escalate within their hearts.
They rise, and in pain, they release their heart’s sighs,
with flames igniting behind their tear-filled eyes.
They willingly submit themselves to their Lord,
and thus, they earned His eternal pleasure.
If you aren’t among them, join their ranks; perhaps,
you will also reap the rewards of your dreams.
Align with them and hold dear their love;
make it the truth of your existence in this life.
Alas, if passion sways me away,
from the path that leads to eternal glory.
Indeed, I would weep for the days gone by,
as a time fades in the yearning of love.
