Verses of Poetry by Al-Shafi’i on Knowledge

Verses from the Poem “Be Patient with the Bitter Harshness of the Teacher”

Endure the bitter harshness of the teacher,

For the failure to acquire knowledge lies in its own negligence.

Whoever has not tasted the bitterness of learning for even an hour,

Will endure the humiliating burden of ignorance throughout his life.

If one misses the opportunity for education in his youth,

Then four grave prayers should be offered for his demise.

For a person’s worth is determined by knowledge and piety;

Without these qualities, there is no regard for his existence.

Verses from the Poem “Learn, for No One is Born a Scholar”

Learn, for no one is born a scholar;

And the knowledgeable cannot be compared to the ignorant.

Indeed, the elder of the community may hold no knowledge,

While a young person can be considered great when learning calls upon him.

Conversely, the young can rise in stature if he is knowledgeable,

So that he becomes the esteemed guest at gatherings.

Verses from the Poem “Should I Scatter Pearls Among Grazing Sheep”

Should I scatter pearls among the grazing sheep?

Or compose my verses for the shepherd of the flock?

Indeed, if I waste my efforts in a vile land,

I would not squander their precious words.

Should God, in His grace, ease my journey,

And I find a community conducive to knowledge and wisdom,

I would share beneficial insights and gain their affection;

Otherwise, I may keep my profound thoughts concealed.

Those who grant knowledge to the ignorant waste it,

And those who deny the deserving are unjust.

Verses from the Poem “Knowledge is the Root of All Pride, So Take Pride”

Knowledge is the root of all pride, hence take pride;

Beware, for you may lose the glory of that root.

And know that knowledge is not attained

By those who are concerned with food and attire.

True seekers of knowledge are those who devote themselves

Regardless of their circumstances, whether clothed or not.

Thus, allocate for yourself a generous portion of it,

And forsake the allure of comfortable rest and ease.

Perhaps one day you will find yourself in a gathering,

Where you are the leader and the pride of that assembly.

Verses from the Poem “How Knowledge Elevates People to Greatness”

How knowledge elevates individuals to high ranks,

While ignorance diminishes others devoid of ethics.

True orphanhood is not just the lack of wealth or a father,

But rather the deprivation of knowledge and virtue.

Indeed, a book is the best companion in solitude,

Providing distraction when friends fail you.

It keeps your secrets safe when entrusted to it,

And offers you wisdom and clarity.

Knowledge is the root of all pride, so take pride;

Beware of missing the glory of that root.

For one day, if you attend a gathering,

You may find yourself as the esteemed leader there.

Verses from the Poem “I Found Knowledge to be Noble”

I found that knowledge dignifies its possessor,

Even if born to unworthy parents.

It continuously raises him until,

The honorable community acknowledges his status.

They follow him in every circumstance,

Like the flock of sheep following their shepherd.

Without knowledge, no man would prosper,

Nor would the lawful and the unlawful ever be distinguished.

Verses from the Poem “One Does Not Grasp Wisdom Until Old Age”

One does not comprehend wisdom simply due to age,

While laboring for the benefit of his family.

Knowledge is not accessible except to those

Who are free from distractions and preoccupations.

If Lokman the Wise, whom many have praised,

Had faced poverty and family burdens,

He would not differentiate between straw and vegetables.
