History of the Italian League
The history of football competitions in Italy dates back to 1898; however, these tournaments were initially limited to the northern regions of the country. In 1929, the Italian League was established, consisting of two divisions: Serie A (the Italian top division) and Serie B (the second division). This change allowed for the inclusion of teams from all Italian regions.
Structure of the Italian League
The Italian football league system currently comprises four main divisions, which are as follows:
- **Serie A**
Managed by the Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A, this league is the premier division in Italy and features 20 professional teams competing for the title.
- **Serie B**
This league is administered by the Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie B and includes 22 professional teams, representing all Italian regions alongside Serie A.
- **Serie C**
Also known as Lega Pro, Serie C is governed by the Italian Football League and is divided into three categories based on the geographical placement of the teams, consisting of 18 professional clubs.
- **Serie D**
This division is organized into nine sections based on geographic locations and is overseen by the regional administration of the National Amateur League.
