Al-Hasan ibn Ali رضي الله عنهما
Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatimah al-Zahra – رضي الله عنهما – is known by the nickname Abu Muhammad. He was born in the first half of Ramadan in the third year of the Hijra, and he passed away in the fiftieth year of the Hijra, being laid to rest in Al-Baqi cemetery. Reports indicate that he bore a resemblance to the Messenger of Allah – صلى الله عليه وسلم – and he is celebrated for several virtues, which include:
- The Messenger of Allah – صلى الله عليه وسلم – publicly expressing his love for both al-Hasan and his brother al-Husayn – رضي الله عنهما.
- The Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم – made supplications for al-Hasan and al-Husayn – رضي الله عنهما.
- The Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم – prophesied that al-Hasan would reconcile between two factions of Muslims, a significant honor for him.
Al-Husayn ibn Ali رضي الله عنهما
Al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatimah al-Zahra – رضي الله عنهما – is commonly referred to as Abu Abdullah. He was born in the fourth year of the Hijra, and here are some of his merits:
- According to Amr ibn al-As – رضي الله عنه – he was the most beloved person to the inhabitants of the heavens.
- He has narrated several Hadiths from the Messenger of Allah – صلى الله عليه وسلم.
- The Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم – prayed for al-Husayn and his brother al-Hasan, demonstrating his affection for both.
Zainab bint Ali رضي الله عنهما
Zainab bint Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatimah al-Zahra – رضي الله عنهما – was born during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah – صلى الله عليه وسلم. She is noted for her wisdom and intelligence, having married her cousin Abdullah ibn Ja’far ibn Abi Talib, with whom she had two children, Awn and Ali.
While there are no specific recorded interactions between the Prophet and his granddaughter Zainab in authentic Sunni narrations, this does not exclude the possibility of such encounters in reality, though none have been documented.
Umm Kulthum bint Ali رضي الله عنهما
Umm Kulthum bint Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatimah al-Zahra – رضي الله عنهما – was also born during the Prophet’s lifetime – صلى الله عليه وسلم. She married the eminent companion Umar ibn al-Khattab – رضي الله عنه – for a dowry of forty thousand, giving birth to two sons, Zayd and Ruqayyah. Tragically, Ruqayyah died on the same day as her child, while Zayd lost his life during a conflict involving Banu ‘Adi.
Following the death of Umar ibn al-Khattab – رضي الله عنه – Umm Kulthum married Awn ibn Ja’far, then Muhammad ibn Ja’far, and finally Abdullah ibn Ja’far. She passed away while married to him, and their only offspring were from Muhammad ibn Ja’far, with a young daughter as a result.
Similar to Zainab, there are no noted events in the authentic Sunnah that detail interactions between the Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم – and his granddaughter Umm Kulthum bint Ali, although it is plausible that such moments occurred.
Umamah bint Abu al-As رضي الله عنهما
Umamah bint Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi ibn Abd al-Uzza ibn Abd Shams ibn Abd Manaf al-Hashimiyah, is a descendant of Zainab – رضي الله عنها – the daughter of the Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم. Numerous accounts illustrate the Prophet’s affection for his granddaughter Umamah, including the following:
- During his prayers, the Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم – would carry her, placing her down when he prostrated and taking her back up upon rising.
- The Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم – held her in high regard, an indication being when he gifted her a necklace he had received as a present, stating it would go to his dearest relative.
- The Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم – received a silver ring from the Negus, which he subsequently gave to Umamah bint Abu al-As – رضي الله عنها.
After the passing of Fatimah – رضي الله عنها – Ali ibn Abi Talib – رضي الله عنه – married her. It is said that she did not bear any children with him. Later, she married Al-Mughirah ibn Nufal following the death of Ali ibn Abi Talib – رضي الله عنه.
