The Essence of Prayer

The term “prayer” linguistically refers to a call or request. In religious terms, it signifies seeking from Allah Almighty, driven by both hope and fear, whether for the forgiveness of a deed, alleviation of harm, or diversion of danger, in pursuit of reward and merit in this world and the Hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned various ways to achieve prayer fulfillment, which may include an immediate response from Allah, the prevention of harm similar to that of the supplication, or the preservation of the prayer for the Afterlife. Thus, prayer becomes an essential aspect of human existence, serving to alleviate trials and preserve bounties.

Answered Prayers

Certain supplications are especially noted for their likely acceptance by Allah Almighty, including the following:

  • The prayer of a righteous child; as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When a person dies, their deeds cease except for three: a continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.”
  • The prayer of a traveler; the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: “There are three supplications that are certainly answered: the prayer of the oppressed, the prayer of the traveler, and the prayer of a parent for their child.”
  • The prayer of the distressed; as stated in the Quran: “Is not He who answers the distressed one when he calls upon Him and removes evil?”
  • The prayer of a Muslim for his brother in his absence; as mentioned by the Prophet (peace be upon him): “The prayer of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is accepted; an angel is appointed at his head, and whenever he prays for his brother, the angel says: ‘Amen, and for you the same.’
  • The prayer of the oppressed; the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The prayer of the oppressed is accepted, even if the one who is oppressing them is a wicked person, as their wickedness is upon themselves.”
  • The prayer of one who frequently remembers Allah; the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Three types of people will not be denied their prayers: the one who remembers Allah abundantly, the oppressed, and the just ruler.”
