Characteristics of Beautiful Eyes

Dajj

The term “Dajj” refers to the intense blackness of the eye paired with its brilliant whiteness and size. A “Dajj” eye signifies a pronounced quality in accordance with this descriptor. An example from poetry illustrating the beauty of Dajj eyes can be found in the words of Kathir Ibn ‘Uzza:

“Except for the Dajj eyes and the Dajj nature,

With which they killed me when they had the chance.”

Hawra

“Hawra” denotes the striking whiteness of the eye contrasted with its deep black, describing it as “Ahwar,” which translates into a beautiful, luminous quality. This description is found in the Holy Quran, where Allah says: “Hoor ‘Ayn, like pearls well-guarded.” Hawra is the plural of “Hawra,” referring to a young, beautiful woman with stunningly white skin and intensely black eyes. Mujahid described the “Hawra” as one whose delicate skin and clear complexion captivate the gaze, while Ibn Abbas notes that “Hawra” in Arabic signifies white faces, and Muqatil states that “Hawra” refers to beautiful white faces.

Tabarruj

“Tabarruj” indicates a significant amount of white in the eyes, alongside the prominence of the eyeball and the beauty of the pupil, giving rise to the term “abrj,” with an eye described as “barja” demonstrating this characteristic.

Taftir

A “fatar” eye, or one that appears languorous, evokes a sense of relaxation in those who gaze upon it, often capturing the viewer’s admiration.

Kohl signifies a natural darkness above the eyelashes, an innate creation of God. The poet Al-Mutanabbi remarked:

“The slain by the charms of kohl-eyed women,

Are kohl eyes that have not been enhanced with kohl.”

“The lashes have a glint, with no impairment.”
