Abu Firas Al-Hamdani and His Love Poetry
Abu Firas Al-Hamdani is renowned for his diverse poetry. Despite passing away at the young age of thirty-seven, his verses have resonated deeply with audiences. His motivation for writing was never monetary gain or social status, as he was already well-versed in both. Notably, Abu Firas excelled in composing love poetry characterized by sensitive feelings and beautiful imagery that reflect his personality. He famously expressed in his poem “Amma Lajameel ‘Indakum Thawab”: “And the beautiful one does not possess my heart entirely, even if she is enveloped in tenderness and youth.”

Who is Abu Firas Al-Hamdani?
Abu Firas Al-Hamdani, born Al-Harith bin Said bin Hamdan in 320 AH in Mosul, Iraq, grew up as an orphan after his father was killed by his cousin, Nasir Al-Dawla Al-Hamdani, during a rebellion aimed at seizing control of Mosul. He became one of the most renowned poets of the Abbasid era, admired for his virtuous character and discretion, making him a role model of his time. In 347 AH, Abu Firas was captured by the Romans at the site known as Magharat Al-Kahl in Iraq, which housed a formidable fortress. He remained in captivity for four years until he escaped, although some accounts suggest that his release was facilitated by Sayf Al-Dawla. Abu Firas eventually passed away in 357 AH in Homs, during a battle against his niece’s son, Abu Al-Maali.
