Hadiths Regarding the Celebration of Eid al-Adha

  • It has been narrated by Aisha, the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her), that she said: “Abu Bakr entered upon me while there were two maidens from the Ansar singing about what the Ansar had said on the Day of Buath. They were not professional singers. Abu Bakr then said: ‘Are there devil’s instruments in the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on a day of celebration?’ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: ‘O Abu Bakr, every people has their holiday, and this is our holiday.’
  • It has been reported that Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) recounted: “Abu Bakr al-Siddiq entered while there were two young girls playing the tambourine and singing. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was covered with a cloth. He uncovered his face and said: ‘Let them be, O Abu Bakr, for these are the days of celebration, and they are days of enjoyment, while the Messenger of Allah was in Medina at that time.’

Hadiths About the Eid al-Adha Prayer

There are numerous hadiths related to the prayer of Eid al-Adha. Some of them include:

  • It has been authentically reported by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would not leave for the Eid al-Fitr prayer until he had eaten some dates.
  • Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed on the day of Eid two rak’ahs, with no prayer before or after them. Then he went to the women accompanied by Bilal, instructing them to give charity, and the women began to throw their earrings.”
  • Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded that we bring out the young girls and women who were secluded on the two Eids, while the menstruating women were instructed to stay away from the place of the Muslim prayer.
  • Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I prayed the Eid prayer with the Prophet (peace be upon him) more than once or twice without an adhan or iqamah.”
  • Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would take a different route on the day of Eid.
  • Buraidah ibn al-Husayb al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would eat on the day of Eid al-Fitr but would not eat on the day of Eid al-Adha until he returned to partake of his sacrifice.
  • It has been narrated by Abdullah ibn Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) came out on the day of either Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha and criticized the delay of the imam, saying: ‘We have completed our hour and that is the time for glorifying Allah.’

Hadiths About Sacrifice

There are various hadiths concerning the sacrifice and its regulations. Here are a few significant ones:

  • It has been reported by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) sacrificed two horned rams, both white and marked, with his own hands, pronouncing the name of Allah and takbir while placing his foot on their sides.
  • Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah arrive and one of you intends to sacrifice, let him not clip his hair or nails.”
  • Al-Bara’ ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Four animals are not permissible for sacrifice: the visibly blind, the clearly sick, the limping, and the emaciated that has no fat. I said: ‘What if the animal is lacking in age?’ He replied: ‘If you dislike it, then leave it; do not prohibit it to anyone else.’

Hadiths Prohibiting Fasting on the Days of Eid al-Adha

There are several hadiths regarding the prohibition of fasting on the days of Eid al-Adha, and here are some of them:

  • It has been reported by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited fasting on the Day of Fitr and the Day of Nahr (sacrifice).
  • Abdullah ibn Umar and Aisha, the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with them), stated: “It was not permitted to fast during the days of Tashreeq, except for one who did not have any sacrificial animals.”
  • Kab ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent him and Aws ibn al-Hadathan during the days of Tashreeq, announcing that no one would enter Paradise except a believer, and those days of Mina are days of eating and drinking.”
