Understanding Al-Ihsan
Al-Ihsan is regarded as one of the noble virtues encouraged by Islam. It refers to the practice of performing deeds with excellence, seeking the satisfaction of Allah Almighty and fearing His accountability. This concept fosters the welfare of individuals both in this world and the hereafter. Allah has established Al-Ihsan as a foundational principle for the acceptance of deeds and the attainment of rewards and recompense. It is important to note that Al-Ihsan extends beyond an individual’s relationship with their Creator; it also encompasses interactions among fellow humans. Actions such as honoring parents, donating to the less fortunate, and aiding those in need are all manifestations of Al-Ihsan.
Poem: Be Kind to People
One of the most renowned poets to articulate the concept of Al-Ihsan is Abu Al-Fath Al-Busti, famous for composing lengthy verses that address the dynamics of life and its challenges. His poetry is characterized by ingenuity and profound meanings, filled with valuable life lessons and guidance for humanity. One of his notable works is the “Noun Poem,” which includes a collection of significant literary proverbs brimming with advice and eloquence, and it has even been translated into Persian. The opening line of this poem states: “The increase of a person in this world is a decrease.” In this article, we will analyze the ninth verse of this poem, which focuses on Al-Ihsan.
Be Kind to People to Win Their Hearts
In this verse, the poet expresses:
Be kind to people to win their hearts.
For indeed, kindness subjugates the heart of mankind.
The core idea of this line is that acts of kindness are met with gratitude, love, and recognition. The poet likens the hearts of those who receive kindness to slaves who obey their master, which in this case is the kind doer. Acts of goodwill significantly affect the hearts of others, allowing an individual to win their affection and loyalty, almost as if owning their hearts.
Allah Almighty emphasizes the importance of Al-Ihsan in the Holy Quran, stating: “And seek by means of what Allah has given you the home of the Hereafter; and do not forget your share of the world; and do good as Allah has done good to you.” [Al-Qasas: 77].
