Supplications of the Prophet during Prayer
There is a collection of supplications that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would recite during his prayers, which include the following:
Opening Supplication
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would begin his prayer after the Takbir (opening declaration) with the following opening supplications before reciting Al-Fatiha:
- (The Messenger of Allah – peace be upon him – would remain silent between the Takbir and the recitation. I assume he said: “for a moment”. So I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you say during your silence between the Takbir and the recitation?” He replied: “I say: O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East from the West. O Allah, purify me from sins as a white garment is purified of dirt. O Allah, wash away my sins with water, snow, and hail.”)
- (I direct my face to the One who created the heavens and the earth, inclining towards Him, and I am not among the polytheists. Indeed, my prayers, my rites of sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of all worlds. He has no partner, and thus I am commanded, and I am among the Muslims. O Allah, You are the King; there is no deity except You. You are my Lord, and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and acknowledged my sins. So forgive me all my sins, for no one forgives sins except You. Guide me to the best of morals; no one guides to the best of them except You. Turn away from me the evil ones; no one can turn them away from me except You. Here I am at Your service; all goodness is in Your hands, and evil is not directed towards You. I am dependent on You and return to You. Blessed are You and exalted. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.)
- (The Prophet – peace be upon him – would say upon starting the prayer: “Glory is to You, O Allah, and I praise You. Blessed is Your name, and exalted is Your majesty. There is no deity except You.”)
Supplication During Bowing
When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) bowed, he would recite the following:
- (O Allah, to You I have bowed, and in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. My hearing, sight, brain, bones, and nerves have humbled themselves to You.)
- (Glory is to You, O Allah, our Lord, and with Your praise, O Allah, forgive me.)
Supplication Upon Rising from Bowing
When raising his head from bowing, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would say: (O Allah, our Lord, to You belongs all praise, filling the heavens and the earth and filling what is between them, and filling whatever You wish of anything thereafter.)
Supplication During Prostration
While in prostration, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would recite the following supplications:
- (Glory is to You, O Allah, our Lord, and with Your praise, O Allah, forgive me.)
- (O Allah, I have prostrated to You, I have believed in You, and I have submitted to You. My face has prostrated to the One who created it, fashioned it, and opened its hearing and sight. Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators.)
Supplication Between the Two Prostrations
According to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace be upon him) would say between the two prostrations: (O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, grant me strength, guide me, and provide for me.)
Supplication Between the Two Testimonies and Before Peace
Between the testimony of faith (Tashahhud) and the concluding peace (Tasleem), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would recite the following supplications:
- (O Allah, I have greatly wronged myself, and no one forgives sins except You. So forgive me a forgiveness from You and have mercy on me; indeed, You are the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.)
- (O Allah, forgive me for what I have done in the past and what I will do in the future, for what I have hidden and what I have revealed, for what I have done in excess, and for what You know better than I. You are the One who advances, and You are the One who delays. There is no deity except You.)
- (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of Hell, and from the torment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil trial of the false messiah.)
