Descendants of the Prophet Isaac
Historical texts indicate that Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) advised his son Isaac to marry only a woman from among his kin. Consequently, Isaac married his cousin Rebekah, and together they had twins whom they named Esau and Jacob, the latter of whom is also known as Israel. It is noteworthy that Isaac was born to Abraham after a long period of waiting, with some accounts suggesting that Abraham was 120 years old at the time.
Prophethood of Isaac (peace be upon him)
Allah Almighty appointed Isaac (peace be upon him) as a prophet and messenger to his people, urging the Canaanites in Palestine and the Levant to worship the One God, may He be exalted. Scholars note that Isaac was the father of Jacob, who became the prophet of the Children of Israel. Allah has praised Isaac in the Qur’an by bestowing upon him commendable attributes and instructed his people to believe in his mission. He was also exonerated from the mischaracterizations attributed to him by some of his contemporaries. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) honored Isaac by stating: “The noble, son of the noble, son of the noble, son of the noble: Joseph, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham (peace be upon them all).” The prophets mentioned in this narration — Joseph, Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham — are all part of a revered lineage.
Jacob (peace be upon him)
Scholars inform us that Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) was also known as Israel. The Almighty mentioned him by this name twice in the Holy Qur’an, as seen in the verse: “All food was lawful to the Children of Israel, except what Israel made unlawful for himself before the Torah was revealed.” The title Israel is permissible and valid. Some Muslim scholars have also borne the name Israel, such as Israel ibn Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq al-Sabi’i, a reliable narrator of the six authentic hadith collections. However, there are differing opinions among scholars regarding the suitability of the name Israel for Muslims.
