Protection of Those Seeking Refuge at His Father’s Grave
It is noted that Al-Farazdaq held his father’s grave in high esteem. Whenever someone approached him seeking refuge, he would assist them in achieving their desires. Additionally, it has been reported that his grandfather, Sa’sa’a, was a prominent figure during the pre-Islamic era and was the first among his ancestors to embrace Islam. One of his significant accomplishments was the rescue of thirty female infants who were to be buried alive. Al-Farazdaq took great pride in his grandfather and composed a number of poetic verses in his honor, which include the following:
My father is one of the two rains, Sa’sa’a,
When does the sky’s dome deliver rain?
He sheltered the daughters of those who would bury them alive, and whoever seeks refuge
In poverty knows that he is not protected.
At a time when daughters were not allowed to live, and they
Were devoted to idols surrounding the altar.
Overview of Al-Farazdaq
Al-Farazdaq, known as Abu Firas Hammam bin Ghalib, is one of the most renowned poets of the Umayyad era. Abu Ghalib was distinguished among his people and was celebrated for numerous admirable traits. The term “Farazdaq” refers to a piece of dough or a large loaf of bread, a name attributed to him due to his broad face and stern expression. He was born and raised in the city of Basra, living for nearly ninety years. Al-Farazdaq’s life encompassed all facets of experience, both sweet and bitter, and alongside Jareer and Al-Akhtal, he represented what is known as the Umayyad Triad of Poetry.
