Poem: “O My Companions, Neither Fitr nor Adha is Joyful”

The poem “O My Companions, Neither Fitr nor Adha is Joyful” is penned by the poet Ibn Zaydun—his full name being Ahmed ibn Abdullah ibn Ahmed ibn al-Ghalib ibn Zaydun al-Makhzumi Al-Andalusi, also known as Abu al-Walid. He is among the notable poets of the Andalusian era, hailing from Cordoba, and is often referred to as the “Buhtari of the Maghreb.”

O my companions, neither Fitr nor Adha is joyful,

What is the state of one who is yearning like the dawn?

If the east of the sun soothes my longing, then it has not ceased

To be the quintessential dwelling of love.

The nostalgia of my heart remains stirred,

Echoing memories that follow the sorrowful moments.

And the Persian palace stirs with excitement,

For my heart, do not hold back the flames of the burn.

It is not shameful to have a council of counsel upon a wise meeting,

For it comes forth with intensifying passion.

As though I had not witnessed moments of counseling,

Wherein the concluding word was the victory of our spirits.

And the actions shadowed by transgressions, if they wandered,

As an envoy expressing submission to confirm reconciliation.

Those days of connection were for me a time of communion,

So if it isn’t during Eid, then knowledge is its counterpart.

Evenings filled with delight in a haven of pleasure,

Bestow upon you greetings when you want to direct your way.

Near still waters whispering, from their spouts,

Emerging vessels revealing themselves like a shimmering dome.

Abodes of delights, lands of yearning,

In them, I paused in hopeful visions.

O, will a return to Al-Zahra not bring forth:

My pangs of longing into an overflowing realm?

Palaces of dominion that shine on all sides,

For we relished the evening meal amidst the dawn’s glow.

Representations of my cord that speak openly,

For their thrones, like stars, grace the open sky.

A place to rest where the essence recalls the fragrance,

If a man cannot endure, it will only remind him of his time.

There the azure fountains greet its edges,

And the shade bears witness to a kind-hearted youth.

I seek to be adorned in the sweet melodies of the youthful ones,

Voices of joy have scattered sleep thin.

With a wineglass clutched, she led forth for me,

Facing the terrors I had borne with pride.

Indeed! My nights, beyond the shore’s edge,

Are much shorter than that comfortable night of dreams.

Reflections on Eid al-Adha

Reflection One:

Eid al-Adha is a special occasion for Muslims, marked by unique traditions, following Eid al-Fitr. Its observance extends from 4 to 5 days, commencing with the Eid prayers and the sacrifice of sheep and cows, distributing the meat among the needy, relatives, and acquaintances. During Eid, schools and workplaces close, allowing children to play and celebrate.

Reflection Two:

As the hours of the night slipped away, dawn broke, heralded by the cry of “Allahu Akbar,” signaling the end of the night and the arrival of morning. People arose from their slumber, happiness lighting their faces—today is Eid! They shed their sleeping garments, donned new clothes, and spread joy in every corner, exclaiming—today is Eid! How beautiful is the night before Eid! The atmosphere hums with anticipation as people await the sunlight, spreading happiness adorned in new attire. This night, have we considered that our sleep leads us to awaited days after the grand reckoning when the earth will shine with the light of Allah? Could this Eid night be calling us to reflect: have you awaited after your wakefulness a grand celebration with your Creator? Have you waited for your great awakening not for joy but for a greater and more profound celebration?

Reflection Three:

Eid al-Adha elevates us through a profound spirit back to the time of Ibrahim, peace be upon him. It feels as if we are witnessing him raising the foundations of the House and Ismail preparing it for the pilgrims and worshipers. We see him addressing his great Lord with a pure heart, a Muslim’s pure submission, and a reverent soul, praying that he has settled his descendants in a barren valley near the Sacred House. He implores the Almighty to let hearts flock to them. From that moment of supplication, centuries have echoed the Divine command, and countless hearts have flown to that place before bodies. If you ask a pilgrim or visitor who has returned, they would admit that they left their hearts behind, yearning for the chance to return.

Reflection Four:

The only reward for a well-performed pilgrimage is Paradise… Is there any joy greater than the triumph of entering Paradise? This bliss explodes in Mecca from pure hearts, carrying scents of joy across the entire Islamic world, in celebration. The happiness of Muslims resonates with the pilgrims celebrating their successful completion of the fifth pillar of faith. It stirs a yearning in every Muslim for the time when they can fulfill this duty themselves. Consequently, the joy shared by old and young, men and women, transforms into festive celebration, leading to the warm welcome of Eid. Every year, may Muslims across the globe experience plentiful blessings.
